The Tippecanoe Library, closed to pub- lic access since late January, has officially reopened with a number of new amenities to greet patrons of all ages. Supporters who were enthusiastic about the return of their neighborhood library gathered for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and a tour of the new digs. The branch library, which has roots going back 84 years, was the subject of dis- cussion in recent years as city staffers eyed a series of improvements to the exist- ing structure, which was constructed in 1969. After soliciting feedback from residents and embarking on a vigorous fundraising appeal that paid for some of the upgrades, officials decided on a list of new amenities, which included a completely overhauled layout that has a more open appearance and heightened reliance on natural light- ing. In a nod to its surroundings in Milwaukee's Garden District, tweaks to Tippecanoe's facility also include a num- ber of sustainable features, including a permeable parking lot surface that is designed to reduce the amount of storm water runoff.
