More than 60 years ago Craig's father, Vance, started the company in 1950. Perry's Heating and Cooling, a family legacy Conditioning and is now in- to the third generation af- ter more than 60 years of service in the area. Today, Craig Perry and Perry's Heating & Air By Andy Heuring ry specialized in maintain- ing those systems. But as technology of pump work in the rural area," said Craig. Grandfather Vance Per- his son Vance are the faces of Perry's. More than sixty years ago, Craig's father, Vance started the compa- ny in 1950. Craig said his father originally worked on wa- ter pumps. He said in the 1940s there were no rural water corporations. Conse- quently people who lived outside the city had to have their own water sys- tem. That meant they had to have their own water pumps. "So there was a lot changed and public wa- ter systems came into be- ing, Perry's changed along with it. They now special- ize in heating and cool- ing systems for homes and businesses. Craig said his father in- ferent now, they are still around. Perry said the lat- est improvement in heat pumps is now they are "du- al fuel" units. He said the heat pump is While they are vastly dif- below 35 degrees. You re- ally do get the best of both worlds," said Perry. In the '50s Perry's went electric, but they also have a natural gas side for when the temperature drops be- low the heat pump's opti- mal operating range. "An electrical heat pump stalled the first heat pump in the tri-county area in 1959 or 1960. Perry said he remembers his father get- ting an award from Public Service Indiana for that in- stallation. "Heat pumps have been around for a long time." is the most efficient and least expensive way to heat, but once the temperature drops below 35 or 36 de- grees then they lose their efficiency and output tem- perature. So the new du- al fuel units use a gas fur- nace to supplement them when the temperature falls with new technology from the water pumps to heat- ing. In the 1960s they jumped on another new trend. Air-conditioning caught on big in mid- to late 1960s. "I remember we were on vacation in Florida and dad came home early and in- stalled an air-conditioner to surprise Mom," said Craig. She was one of many granted now until it goes out, then we wonder how we ever lived without it. Appropriately they sell the Comfortmaker brand of heating and air-condi- tioning products. They handle everything from remodeling to new home installations to light commercial. "We have done several churches in Petersburg and Pike Coun- ty," said Craig. Craig graduated from happy customers, whose lives were changed by the installation of air-condi- tioning by Perry's. Air-conditioning is one of those things we take for sity, specializing in HVAC Systems and Controls. Craig said he started working with his father at 13 or 14 years old and grew into it. Craig's wife Denah, is a South Knox High School in 1973. He has worked ever since with Perry's. "I was just kind of born into it and never really thought about doing anything else." His son, Vance, is a recent graduate of Purdue Univer- Breckenridge St., Mon- roe City, one block west of Main St. Their hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. One pop- ular project involves rede- signing the front yard or backyard to include an ar- ray of different flowers and foliage. While many peo- ple gravitate to the flashy and colorful annuals on display at nurseries and home centers, you may want to consider adding some succulents to your home landscape. Succulent plants can be a Now is the time of year boon to a homeowner with- out the time or resources to maintain plants. Succulents get their name from their primary function, which is drawing up and storing wa- ter. Succulents are able to thrive in arid conditions, and there are more than 300 different types, includ- ing some exotic species. The advantages to plant- ing succulents are many. Because they store water in their stems, roots and leaves, this reduces the number of times an owner must wa- ter them. Succulents can go several days between water- ings. Succulents, like cacti, that have few if any leaves, are perhaps best at manag- ing water because they lose little to evaporation through the foliage. Succulents are particu- larly good to have in areas prone to arid temperatures or where water restrictions are often in place. They can be environmentally friend- ly because of their ability to conserve water. Succu- lents treat water as a pre- cious resource, and their entire makeup is designed to minimize consumption of water. Because they thrive in sunlight, succulents can be the ideal plants to put in ex- tremely sunny and hot loca- tions. They will not wither and dry out due to extreme heat. For particularly dry areas of landscape or where soil is subpar, consider the placement of different vari- eties of succulents to cre- ate a varied and eye-catch- ing display. There are many other ad- vantages to planting succu- lents; some of which include: trasts in shape, texture and colors. With the many varieties, you're bound to find something interest- ing and different to add to the landscape. * Whether you have am- * Succulents offer con- ple acreage in the yard or simply some containers available for planting, suc- culents will thrive. Think about pruning back or removing trees that would create too much shade on the succulents. Space the succulents widely apart -- more so than you would with other plants -- to allow them to spread.
