The Press-Dispatch Spring Home and Garden Wednesday, April 11, 2012 D-3 Generations of Service at Hulsman Refrigeration has been around 40 years in Dubois County. It is a famil- iar sign everyone has seen at the corner of Highway 56 and Kluemper Road. Andy Hulsman is now at Hulsman Refrigeration By Andy Heuring the helm of the company his father Kenny started out of his garage in 1970 in Ireland. Hulsman grew up in the refrigeration, heating and air-conditioning business and literally saw the busi- ness grow up around him. "In 1970 air-conditioning ditioners and furnaces change over the years as they have gone through nu- merous technological ad- vances. One of the major advanc- es that has come along in Hulsman's time is the geo- thermal WaterFurnance. A geothermal unit works off the heat in the earth. Ground temperature re- mains at 55 degrees year round. A water furnace use a system of water pipes through the ground to pro- vide heating. It then has a heat exchanger to pipes the heat either into your hous- es in winter or out of your house in the summer. It doesn't have a heating system using fossil fuels for the heat. They can reduce heating bills by as much as 70 per- cent. Because they are so efficient Hulsman said they qualify for a 30 percent tax credit for those installing a new unit. That means if you put in a $3,000 system a homeowner will get a tax credit of almost $1,000. Hulsman said his father installed the first geother- mal system in the area back in the 80s. "We really do concen- that it can't be installed in an existing house. He said units can be installed in new construction or ex- isting houses. There are numerous ways to install them so they can accommo- date what ever type of lot the house sits on. "Where there's a will there's a way," he said about geothermal. He said the units are made in Indiana at their Fort Wayne headquarters. Kenny worked out of a was a luxury," said Hulsman. He has seen air-con- garage when he started and built the business. An- dy graduated from Jasper High School in 1985 and went on to graduate from Ball State. He said when he went to college he didn't expect to be in his father's business. He thought he would be going somewhere else. "Who didn't," said Hulsman. But he returned to Jas- per and went to work for his father in a trade he learned working along side his father. "I remember going to two-a-day football practic- es and the other kids say- ing they could wait to get home to rest. When I got home dad put me to work," said Andy. Kenny retired 10 years Hulsman has the expertise and service to get the job done right. Above are Andy Huslman, Sean Kai- ser, Jesse Sermersheim, Joe Beck and Blake Kempf. ago and Andy continues on from the Kluemper Road and Highway 56 location. He said new air-condi- tioning units and furnaces are still the basic principals as they have been for years. They are just better. "They get much better gas mile- age," said Hulsman about the improved efficiency. Hulsman has seen a long trate on geothermal. We probably do as much as 70 percent in geothermal," said Andy. He said there is a miscon- ception about geothermal, company. We try to keep everybody happy," said Hulsman. In fact, it was actually the first manufac- tured wood product avail- able. Then the term MDF, or medium-density fiberboard, started making its way onto home-improvement shows and among do-it-yourself- ers, making it a popular ma- terial in recent years. Plywood is constructed For decades plywood was by gluing several layers of thin wood veneers between two pieces of wood to cre- ate a solid sheet. Experts say there is an odd number of veneer layers, and each one is attached at a right an- gle to the one below to add strength to the plywood. There may be knots or ir- regularities in the plywood because it is made of actu- al slices of wood. It comes in a variety of strengths, de- pending on the thickness of the plywood. Thickness can vary by sheet depending on the manufacturer, so each sheet may not be consistent. ly used for walls, ceilings and subfloors because of its strength. MDF is wide- ly relied on for building cab- inets, crafts, shelving and trimwork. Under heat or pressure, the MDF is made into a sol- id material. Because MDF is not made from slices of wood to form veneers, it will not have the traditional graining or knots associat- ed with wood. This can be an advantage or disadvan- tage depending on how it is ultimately used. MDF is of- ten easy to cut, drill and ma- nipulate because users will not have to work around grain or knots. But users should be careful to drill pi- lot holes before attaching MDF because it can split. Due to machine creation, MDF is generally uniform in thickness, which makes it consistent for many uses.
