By the time they'd finished their lunch, the basic story of Beautiful Creatures was born, and they were ready to start writing on comput- ers instead of napkins. The result is a love story about Ethan Lawson Wate, average high school basket- ball player, (the ancestor of Ethan Carter Wate who en- tered the Civil War to im- press the family of Gene- vieve Duchannes enough that he hoped they would let her marry him…they didn't), and of Leila Duch- annes (Genevieve's descen- dant), the unusual girl Ethan can't seem to stay away from, even though she moved into town to live with her oddly eccentric uncle in a creepy old house that everyone else is afraid to go near. It's also a mystery: what a "hungry, illiterate girl who has such a desire to read that she steals books..." instead of food. But to tell you more about makes Leila so different from the other girls? And what is she so afraid of that's supposed to happen on her sixteenth birthday? How is it that Ethan was having dreams about her before she ever moved to town? And finally, it's a haunt- ingly captivating fantasy where no one is quite what they seem, that keeps you reading and makes you sor- ry when you run out of pag- es. There are three sequels. I'll be ordering book two and book three right away, book four comes out next fall. If you haven't read the Book Thief by Markus Zu- sak, it is an unusual and grip- ping book about the holo- caust from a totally different perspective. To quote from the introduction, it's about: "a girl, some words, some fa- natical Germans, an accordi- onist, a Jewish fist fighter", and a book thief. Or, in an- other description: it's about Real Estate transfers nis R. Arnold AKA, Brenda Kay Arnold, and Brenda K. Arnold convey to DB Arnold LLC, real estate as recorded in Pike County. It's about one such girl, one such family, and a few good neigh- bors. Oh, and one more un- usual thing about this book: the narrator is Death.
