By DAVE FIDLIN Special to the Post MILWAUKEE — In the days ahead, city of Milwaukee property owners will see a light blue envelope intermingled with their mail. Inside will be the customary document reveal- ing how much is being taxed on property for this year. City Treasurer Spencer Coggs said tax bills will be mailed out today, and most property owners should see their bill on Saturday. While the city mails out the tax bills, as is standard practice, five other taxing entities will be levying dollars to fund operating budg- ets in 2016. The additional authorities include Milwaukee Public Schools, Milwaukee County, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, Milwaukee Area Technical College and the state of Wisconsin. Barring such circumstances as facilities improvements that have raised a specific prop- erty's assessed value, most taxpayers should experience a drop in taxes in year-over-year comparisons. In all but one instance, tax rates for the six taxing entities are flat or have decreased. The city of Milwaukee has dipped 10 cents, from $10.71 per $1,000 of assessed value to $10.61 per $1,000 of assessed value. Milwaukee Public Schools has reported an even larger tax rate decrease, from $10.64 per $1,000 of assessed value in 2014 to $10.20 per $1,000 of assessed value this year. Other changes include a 5-cent drop for Milwaukee County: from $5.33 per $1,000 of assessed value to $5.28 per $1,000 of assessed value, and a 4-cent drop for MATC: from $1.33 per $1,000 of assessed value to $1.29 per $1,000 of assessed value. MMSD has maintained a flat tax rate — $1.79 per $1,000 of assessed value — while the state is raising its rate by 1 cent, from 17 cents per $1,000 of assessed value to 18 cents per $1,000 of assessed value. The specific amount of taxes levied by each entity reveals a mixed picture, though most authorities have maintained a status-quo DID YOU KNOW? • Apples are better at waking you up in the morning than caffeine. • Dentists have recommended that a toothbrush be kept at least 6 feet from a toilet to avoid airborne particles resulting from the flush. – Source: sotruefacts.com MARK BELLING Is this federal magistrate judge an idiot?
