Publisher The Indiana Volume 80, Issue 12 • December 10, 2015 Published on second Thursday monthly New ads in public notice toolkit Notices remain vital part of government transparency N ewspapers can access additional mate rials in the Public Notice Advertising Toolkit created by the HSPA Board of Directors' Promotional Committee. The items are all part of HSPA's efforts to help member newspapers educate the public on the value and importance of public notice adver tising in a democratic society. The new items distributed to publishers this week include another round of ads promoting public notice advertising. The latest ads were created by the staff of The Times (Munster). Also distributed were two documents – one speaking to the policy basis for public notice advertising and the second offering tips to pub lishers on how to best treat the notices as an integral part of their newspapers. These new items follow an ear lier series of promotional ads cre ated by the staff of The Elkhart Truth and a sample editorial con cerning the publication of notice of budget hearings. Future work includes an elec tronic guide to public notice adver tising, created under the supervi sion of HSPA Executive Director and General Counsel Steve Key. Pete Van Baalen, publisher of The Elkhart Truth, currently chairs HSPA's Promotional Committee. Also serving on the committee are Chris White, publisher of The Times and president of the HSPA Board of Directors; Greg Morris, publisher of the Indianapolis Business Journal; and Beverly Joyce, publisher of The Herald- Bulletin (Anderson). Corydon Democrat, Daily Journal take Blue Ribbon honors J ournalists from around the state gathered in Indianapolis for training and recognition Dec. 5. The HSPA Foundation presented its Newsroom Seminar and Better Newspaper Contest Awards Luncheon at the Indianapolis Marriott North, held annually on the first Saturday of December. Morning training sessions in investigative reporting, public access to information, digital news, storytelling and photogra- phy preceded the awards luncheon. Taking home the top honors were the Daily Journal (Franklin) and The Corydon Democrat, who won the daily and non- daily Blue Ribbon Awards, respectively. The second place daily Blue Ribbon Award went to The Indianapolis Star, and the Jour nal & Courier (Lafayette) received third place. In the nondaily Blue Ribbon division, the The Times-Post (Pendleton) took second place, and third went to the Hendricks County Flyer (Avon) Other top honors included: Story of the Year: Mikel Livingston & Steven Porter, Journal & Courier (Lafayette), The great Chicago myth Photo of the Year: Jonathan Miano, The Times (Munster), A Proper Burial Ray Moscowitz Award: Kim Kilbride, South Bend Tribune, education beat watchdog reporting General Excellence first-place awards: Division 1: The Times-Post (Pendleton) Division 2: Brown County Democrat (Nashville) Division 3: The Tribune (Seymour) Division 4: Daily Journal (Franklin) Division 5: The Republic (Columbus) Division 6: South Bend Tribune See Pages 6-7 for photos from the Newsroom Seminar.
