Red Bluff Daily News - Women In business - Wednesday, October 28, 2015 - 15 e Red Bluff-Tehama county branch of the American Association of University Women has awarded a $5,000 college scholarship to Jessica Macdonald. A 2013 graduate of Red Bluff Union High School, Macdonald has been enrolled in the pre-nursing program at the University of Nevada, Reno, working toward a goal of becoming a registered nurse. Carrying 15-17 units each semester, she has attained a weighted grade point average of 3.955. In the summer of 2014 Macdonald moved to Sacramento to go to school and obtain her certified nursing assistant license. Aer pass- ing the state test, she is now licensed in both California and Nevada. She plans to return to UNR to get a bachelor's degree in nursing and become a registered nurse. In high school Macdonald was a life member of California Scholarship Federation and was active in volleyball and basketball, continuing as UNR intramural volleyball co-captain. In 2011 and 2012 she was Daily News athlete of the week, and in 2010 received the Daily News "Difference Maker" athletic award. A nine-year 4-H member, Macdonald was bronze, silver, gold, platinum and emerald star winner, serving in many offices and earning awards for her horse and sheep projects. At the Tehama District Fair she was round rob- in master showman (all species) 2009-2013, and showed the supreme champion market lamb 2009-2011. She achieved Future Farmers of America Greenhand and Chapter Farmer degrees and won local and sectional project contests and the local speech contest. Macdonald is a life member of the American Quarter Horse association and the Northern California Reined Cow Horse association. Her interest in 4-H and horses led her be- come a founder and director of the Northern California HERO Ride for Life, from 2009 to the present. During school breaks and during school, she continues to plan and organize this April event that has now generated almost $200,000 to be donated to the American Can- cer Society. Macdonald received the Soroptimist In- ternational Violet Richardson award in 2010 and 2011,the Prudential Spirit of Community finalist award in 2010, the American Cancer Society extraordinary volunteer award in 2010, and the American Legion President's education award in 2009, At the same time Macdonald has been gain- ing work experience. Most recently it has been as a secretary with a law office, but earlier as secretary at a candy company. During the sum- mer of 2014 she worked for an adult mental health caregiver. In addition to childcare, she has worked at a local fruit stand and weekly cleaned a business establishment. Macdonald awarded scholarship from University Women 365 So.
