TV Media Weekly | October 10 - 16, 2015 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: What happened with "The Whispers"? Did it really end that way, never to return, or will it be coming back? A: There are a couple of rea- sons why the renewal or cancela- tion of ABC's summer thriller, "The Whispers," has been tricky — one of which is the reason why your question is tricky as well. The network hasn't made a de- cision on the series. It wasn't an outright hit in the ratings, though its "plus-three" numbers — that is, the people who watch the show within three days on their DVRs (digital video recorders) — were reportedly a lot better. That's a problem for the show, since networks don't value those ratings as highly as live ratings. It's also a problem for this col- umn, because it suggests a lot of people may still have the show sitting around in their DVRs, so I can't talk about what happened in the finale. It suffices to say that, since this is a suspense- based show with a serialized plot, things were not totally re- solved. The fact that ABC hasn't made a decision yet would normally not be a big deal, since the first-sea- son finale only aired on Aug. 31 — networks frequently take much longer than that to make renewal decisions. However, peo- ple were expecting a decision sooner because the actors' con- tracts expired in June, meaning they've since been free to pursue other roles. And many have. Lily Rabe (who plays Claire in the series) has joined the cast of the upcoming season of "American Horror Sto- ry," and Milo Ventimiglia (who plays Sean) is reportedly being considered for a new USA Net- work series called "Shooter." Barry Sloane (Wes) appears in the new season of "Longmire," which has been available on Net- flix since mid-September (the vid- eo-streaming service posts whole seasons at a time, so there was no "premiere," per se). Hollywood Q&A By Andrew Warren TV Media S troll around the streets of Las Vegas late at night and you just might wit- ness an after-hours show like no other. The moonlit duels between the city's chefs are a local tradition that have gained a national audience, and the fights are coming back for an- other round. The second season of "Late Nite Chef Fight" pre- mieres Thursday, Oct. 15, on FYI. Hosted by four-time world champion boxer Laila Ali and chef Vic "Vegas" Moea, each hour-long episode is based on the Vegas tradition. So just what are these post- dusk duels? In each episode, two of the city's famous chefs step out of their kitchens and into a food truck that they've never been in before. They'll be without their armies of highly trained kitchen staff. They won't have their fan- cy sous-vide machines and won't have the time to braise meats for hours. The ingredi- ents they'll be given to work with range from unfamiliar to outright exotic. There's another twist, too: they'll be working in front of a live audience that tends to get a little bit loud. Over three starlit rounds, their skills will be put to the test in these small, unfamiliar kitchens with weird, unfamiliar ingredients. In the true spirit of this classic Vegas brawl, though, the winner only takes home bragging rights — that, and a meal cooked by the loser. Of course, since this is a com- petition, there has to be judges. Each night, two of them will be on hand, and they include "Top Chef's" Spike Mendelsohn, L.A. chef Russell Jackson, Food Net- work and Cooking Channel ce- lebrity Aida Mollenkamp ("Ask Aida," "FoodCrafters") and chef Casey Lane. In a town built on high stakes, it's the ultimate low- stakes battle for these pros: all they stand to lose is a good night's sleep. The first season of "Late Nite Chef Fight" was a hit for FYI, and Las Vegas's cool nights have been heating up in anticipation of the second.
