Her son, Gage Besing, was no longer a 'lil buddy.' He was now a 'lil angel.' "His spirit is here. He knows I don't like to sweat, so it's a wonderfully cool, fall day today," said Nossett, laughing but teary eyed, as she looked around the Gib- son County Fairgrounds Saturday afternoon at the Trucks 4 Kids event. "When we walked up to get our stuff – that was tough." Just a year ago, the viva- cious 6 -year-old was having fun at the fundraising event. In heaven, so to speak, be- cause of his love of fire- trucks and big trucks in gen- eral, she recalled. "He loved it," she said sim- ply. In December 2014, the 6 -year-old Petersburg boy lost his short battle with an aggressive cancer. Since then, Nossett has joined the board of the local organiza- tion that provided so much support to her family as a way to give back and provide support to other families. "These people (Trucks 4 Kids volunteers) become your family," she said. "I want to keep Gage's memo- ry alive." Currently, the nonprof- it group is assisting 14 chil- dren – or 'lil buddies' – from across the Tri-State who are battling a terminal ill- ness or chronic illness. The support is mainly provided in the form of gift cards to help families take care of everyday expenses such as gasoline and food, especially when lengthy hospital stays are required. The group also has four 'lil angels' – lil bud- dies whom have lost their battle. "We're here for the kids and for the family. We just want to make them happy," said Carrie Cox, a board member who recommend- ed Nossett's family for assis- tance during Gage's battle. Over the weekend, the group held a three-day fun- draiser at the fairgrounds that featured mud drags, dirt drags, a blood drive, live music, an off-road course, crafts and inflatables. The Gibson County Antique and Machinery Club also held its antique and tractor pulls. Jessica Buck of Prince- ton said the organization was formed several years ago after her husband, Chris Buck, decided to host a truck pull. The first event benefited Riley's Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Since then, it has morphed into an organization with a board, an application pro- cess and regular events.
