Real fictional friends: Some
people make friends at work.
Others just bring their friends
with them. "Doll & Em," HBO's
British import about an actress
who hires her best friend to be
her assistant, delighted audi-
ences with its first season, so it's
no surprise that a second season
has arrived. The sophomore sea-
son premieres Sunday, Sept. 13,
on the premium channel.
Returning for this second sea-
son are Emily Mortimer ("Shut-
ter Island," 2010, "Hugo,"
2011) and Dolly Wells ("Bridget
Jones's Diary," 2001) as fiction-
alized versions of themselves.
The two real-life best friends
also play best friends on screen,
and the first season ended with
their friendship very nearly ru-
ined.
Luckily, the two have made
up and the second season will
revolve around them writing
and producing a play that
they're hoping to take to Broad-
way — or, failing that, off-
Broadway.
Of course, the play will need
actors, and that's where this
season's guest stars come in.
Hollywood stars Evan Rachel
Wood ("Across the Universe,"
2007, "The Wrestler," 2008) and
Olivia Wilde ("TRON: Legacy,"
2010, "Rush," 2013) will be
playing themselves, cast in the
lead roles of the troubled pro-
duction.
Just to make things even
more surreal, the play that's be-
ing written by the titular charac-
ters is itself a fictional retelling
of their relationship.
So, to recap: Emily Mortimer
and Dolly Wells star in a show in
which they play fictional ver-
sions of themselves, writing a
play about their own fictional
selves.
It's a concept that's just crazy
enough to be funny, and if the
reaction that the first season got
was any indication of the sec-
ond, it's bound to be hilarious.
"Doll & Em" premieres its sec-
ond season Sunday, Sept. 13, on
HBO.
Not another period drama:
They love it! They really, really
love it! Comedy Central has
been going through some big
changes lately, with favorites
Jon Stewart and Stephen Col-
bert parting ways with the chan-
