The Indiana State Library project will culminate in digitizing 100,000 newspaper pages from major Indiana titles published between 1836 and 1922. Nine newspapers have been selected for consideration for the two-year project. They include: • Jasper Weekly Courier • Plymouth Democrat • Plymouth Republican • Indiana State Sentinel • Indiana Journal • Indiana American • Indianapolis Leader • Wabash Express • Randolph County Journal Work has started on digi- tizing microfilm from the Indiana State Library's col- lection for the Jasper and Plymouth newspapers, said Chris Ittenbach, project man- ager for the effort. Additional microfilm has been selected from the Indiana Historical Society to complete the project, he said. Once the microfilm has been scanned, each image is examined for readability and then submitted for further processing for search capabil- ity, including keyword search- ing, Ittenbach said. The project is funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Newspapers digitized as part of the project will be included in the Library of Congress' Chronicling America database at chroniclingamerica.loc.gov. In addition to the Indiana papers presence in the Chronicling America data- base, the digitized papers will also be available through Indiana Memory (www.indianamemory.org), a collaborative effort to provide access to materials available in Indiana libraries, archives, museums and other cultural institutions. March 1, 2012 The Mail-Journal turns 50 The Mail-Journal, the flagship publication of The Papers Inc. headquartered in Milford, marked a significant milestone Feb. 15. Forty-nine years of local news have come off the presses, and the newspaper observed its 50th anniversary in serving the Wawasee area community with a six-page special section. The newspaper serves the northern Indiana communi- ties of Milford, North Webster and Syracuse. The first issue of The Mail- Journal was printed Feb. 15, 1962. As the merger of The Syracuse-Wawasee Journal and The Milford Mail by Arch and Della Baumgartner, The Mail-Journal served to give the community a stronger and more comprehensive voice. Fifty years later, it is still the flagship publication of a growing company and contin- ues to bring the communities it serves together and guide its citizens. The staff of The Mail-Journal observes the 50th anniversary of the newspaper this year. The first issue was printed Feb. 15, 1962. "It's hard to believe my family has been involved in the community newspaper business for all these years," said Ron Baumgartner, pub- lisher and president of The Papers Inc. "It's a paper with a main focus that hasn't changed much in the last 50 years." The staff works hard to ensure that The Mail-Journal is the best possible newspaper for the communities it serves, said Jeri Seely, editor in chief. Staff members of The Mail- Journal try to add a local touch to national events, with most of the paper's news being about local meetings and events, Seely said. "We offer a service to our readers as we report the events taking place in the greater Lakeland area," Seely said.
