10 Red Bluff 2012 A place of discovery The Sacramento River Discovery Center Discovery Garden The 2-acre Discovery Garden was designed to illustrate low water use landscaping. Plants were selected based on their decorative qualities in addition to their easy main- tenance and low water needs. The 150 different plant species are either California native or have adapted to the California climate. On the last Saturday in October, the center hosts an annual garden festival and plant sale. The Discovery Garden is always open. The Sacramento River Discovery Center is open for short visits of a few hours, or extended tours with guided lectures at a small fee that must be pre-scheduled. Most of the research and displays at the center have been created by students and the community. People from many diverse agen- cies and organiza- tions, representing a broad-based com- munity effort, came together to create the Sacramento River Discovery Center to promote understanding of the balance between the river, its watershed and the community. The 488-acre site is an outdoor class- room at the Red Bluff Recreation Area and offers walking trails through native habitats such as a riparian forest, flowering grass- lands, wetlands and oak wood- lands. Locals appreciate the center for Sacramento River Discovery Center 527-1196 annual events like the Watershed Celebration, featuring a 5K and 10K run/walk and children's activities, held the third Saturday in May. There are also numerous com- munity projects that the center encourages such as the high school's Regional Occupation Program, the summer camp from mid-June through the first week of August and the art- work that's for sale inside the center. The visitor's cen- ter is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center contains educational displays and hands-on interpretive displays. The center also hosts monthly evening programs and an annual dinner meeting. The center is at the end of Sale Lane, two miles south of Red Bluff. More information is available at 527-1196. Educational Programs The Sacramento River Discovery Center offers numerous educational programs including: the high school Natural Resource Academy pro- vided through a joint partnership with the Red Bluff Joint Union High School District, the sum- mer intern program with Lassen Volcanic National Park; profes- sional development training for teachers; and programs for school groups, including day activities, raft trips and overnight camping.
