By DAN MUCKELBAUER Post Editor SOUTH MILWAUKEE — Whether it's called the Grant Park Lagoon or the Mill Pond, South Milwaukee residents and offi- cials are taking an interest in the area around Oak Creek in the village. How big of an area, size of project or time span are up for question as the sediment con- tinues to build, lowering the water level to where it hasn't been skateable since 2001. In the meantime, events like Restore the Lagoon Festival on Aug. 29 and Halloween at the pond's warming house by two civic groups are keeping the site in the minds of the pub- lic. "They're patient to a point, then they want to see something," said Nancy Wucherer, pres- ident of the 12-year-old Friends of Mill Pond and Oak Creek Watercourse, of the public. Her nonprofit group has helped fund projects to restore the warming house and other work at the pond, including twice-annual cleanups and annual clinics. "Bureaucracy is slow. You just have to nudge them along, which we've done. We had the Haunted House at the Pond with the Lions Club, which was a huge success," she said. South Milwaukee Mayor Erik Brooks, who regularly blogs about the watershed, said a total study of the 28-mile Oak Creek Watershed MARK BELLING Funding complaint follows lavish locker room project Page 8 Arrowhead's cheap shot falls short WHISTLING STRAITS TAKES CENTER STAGE OF THE GOLF WORLD – PAGE 14 STEVE 'THE HOMER' TRUE UW coach takes on athletic director on basketball succession Page 11 Ryan in one corner; Alvarez in the other Supporters see lagoon at heart of Oak Creek watershed project See LAGOON on Page 10 MILWAUKEE COUNTY'S WEEKLY NEWSPAPER AUGUST 21, 2015 Study seen as first phase of restoration Local news at your fingertips Visit www.gmtoday.com Map data: Google SAVE $ 30 .00 up to Via Mail-In Rebate on the purchase of fuel* with the purchase of Budweiser Family. $10 REBATE on Fuel* with purchase of one (1) Budweiser Family 18-pack or larger. *Fuel purchase must exceed $10.00 $20 REBATE on Fuel* with purchase of two (2) Budweiser Family 18-pack or larger. *Fuel purchase must exceed $20.00 $30 REBATE on Fuel* with purchase of three (3) Budweiser Family 18-pack or larger. *Fuel purchase must exceed $30.00 Due to Construction on Howell Enter off 6th Bolivar Ave 4075 S.
