Sports editor – Passionate about local sports? The Times in Noblesville, Indiana, needs a sports editor who goes beyond reporting play-by-play and tells the great stories behind the ath- letes and coaches who make up Hamilton County sports. Page 2 August 13, 2015 Longtime AP employee made sure wire worked New Castle sports editor volunteered with Kiwanis W alter M. Tabak, 91, a longtime communi cation chief for The Associated Press, died Aug. 7, 2015. The Indian apolis resident was an Army veteran of World War II. Tabak remained active in journalism causes following his retirement from The AP. He was the first winner of the Distinguished Service Award presented by the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame to those who have made contributions to jour nalism through such ancil lary areas as technology, business or freedom of infor mation. According to the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame, Tabak helped newspapers make dramatic changes to their information delivery systems. During his tenure with The AP, words moved at 66 a minute via Teletype but later transferred at a rate of 1,200 words a minute through satel lites. When Tabak began at The AP, photos were delivered on flimsy paper. By the time he retired in 1986, photos were called "LaserPhotos," according to the Hall of Fame. Tabak was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy M. Tabak. He is survived by his daughter Barb (Dennis) Burris; son, Ron (Gloria) Tabak; grandchildren, Travis (Amy) Tabak, Kristin (Zach) Eichel and Tyler (Ashley) McCreary; greatgrand children, Olivia, Kaliway, Maggie, Ethan and Kyle. R etired sports editor John Fredrick Hodge, 66, of New Castle died July 31, 2015, doing what he loved. He fell ill while playing golf and didn't recover. Hodge was born July 2, 1949, in Richmond. He called New Castle his home for the past 28 years. He graduated from Richmond High School in 1967 and later gradu ated from Ball State Teacher College. He was a teacher for three years in Missouri before becoming a fulltime journal ist. Hodge found his home when he moved to New Castle and started working for The Courier-Times. He retired there last year, after 27 years of service to the newspaper and to the community. He spent most of those years serving as the paper's sports editor. He won several journalism awards through the Hoosier State Press Association. He was a recipient of the Indiana High School Athletic Association's Distinguished Media award. Upon his retirement last year Indiana State Rep. Tom Saunders presented him with the Distinguished Hoosier Award, given by Gov. Mike Pence. Hodge enjoyed meeting the athletes and personalities he encountered through writing for the newspaper, and he built lasting friendships in the process. He was an avid Cincinnati Reds baseball fan. When he wasn't playing golf dur ing his free time, he was attending baseball games. He would stand up and sing at the seventh inning stretch, whether he was at a ballpark or watching a game on televi sion. Hodge loved gathering with friends and watching Indianapolis Colts football games. He was active in the New CastleHenry County Kiwanis, where he served in many capacities. He was the Rose District Lieutenant Governor at the time of his death. Hodge was preceded in death by his parents, James F. and Mary Z. (Blake) Hodge. He is survived by his aunt, Dorothy Blake, cousins and numerous friends. Walter M. Tabak John F.
