Stopping is. That is how I explain to my patient's how their "minor" fender bender turned from a stiff neck to restless nights, to pain, weeks later. Whiplash is the lay term for sudden cervical acceleration/ deceleration syndrome (CADS). If you're lucky, the emergency room will check you for broken bones, torn ligaments or other major life threatening conditions. Upon release, with the appropriate prescription for pain, many patients are unsure what to do when they have unusual symptoms but were told by the doctors that they're okay. Eventually they call a Chiropractor because they have "heard" it may help. Actually, chiropractic is the only treatment that fully addresses the full complications of CADS. CADS can cause a myriad of issues ranging from stretching of delicate ligaments, muscles and nerves. Studies have reported that low speed collisions, while not damaging steel automobiles, still transfers the force of the collision to the occupants, resulting in abrupt cervical motion (CADS). Over time this injury causes swelling, irritation and interference with the actual nerves that control healing and functioning of the body. Left long enough untreated, scar tissue can form making the condition permanent. Research has also shown that joint surfaces, called facet joints, are impacted, much like smashing your two fists together, causing swelling and damage to these special and important neck joints. Women were shown to have thinner facet joints than men, indicating a possible reason for more women reporting pain than men after an accident. Thoracic (chest) and low back pain are also common injuries in accidents because it is not just the neck that is subject to large forces. Unfortunately, many insurance companies have trained people that if their car isn't damaged then neither are you. Realistically this isn't true. Metal and humans have different characteristics, and, humans are part of a delicate fine tuned organism that needs constant internal communication to survive. Chiropractors are the only Doctors trained to detect, diagnose and properly treat this condition, called a subluxation. If you or someone you know has been in an accident, schedule an appointment today to start your return to health!
