February 2, 2012 News in brief Newspaper in Education Week in March, Indiana NIE will offer a new opportunity this year – a free webinar that shares models of cre ative opportunities for using newspapers in the class room. The training will highlight both digital and print edi tions. Kriss Johnson, Newspaper in Education/eedition super visor for the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader will present two sessions Feb. 28. The first at 3:45 p.m. will cover material appropri ate for teachers of Grades 3 through 5. The second at 4:45 p.m. will target middleschool teach ers. "In the past Indiana NIE created tabloids filled with activities for use in the classroom," said Karen T. Braeckel, director of the HSPA Foundation. "Now as young people spend more time on computers, we need to change our focus to include eeditions. "Kriss is a nationally rec ognized authority in NIE and recently became responsible for marketing Lexington's eedition." Newspaper promotional video available The Indiana Newspaper in Education Foundation funded the creation of a video to encourage teens to read the newspaper – online as most do. The NIE Foundation sug gests including your news paper's website with infor mation about the video. proposal contained in S.B. 259 is a fair request but is troubled by testimony of the school boards association, which indicates that orga nization believes the excep tion could be applied more broadly than HSPA's inter pretation. • HSPA is working with Rep. Suzanne Crouch, REvansville, on H.B. 1003, which would set standards for how statewide commis sions can incorporate com munications technology to allow some members to par ticipate in meetings via long distance. Crouch successfully offered a second reading amendment to the bill that contained suggestions from HSPA. • Sen. Vanetta Becker, REvansville, introduced a bill that would have set stan send lawmakers. The Distinguished Service Award honoree will receive the traditional winner's cup at the Governor's Reception on Feb. 16. Attorney General Greg Zoeller will speak. Session speaker Chris Lee, executive vice president and publisher for the Deseret News (Salt Lake City), will address upheavals in con sumption, costs and culture in the news industry on Feb. 17. His presentation also will include a focus on ideas for cost reductions. Lee, a Harvard Business School graduate with a News paper Association of America Foundation that incor porate newspapers in the classroom are available to download at www.HSPAFoundation.org/ newspapereducation. Papers are encouraged to alert teachers in their areas about the free materials and post a link on their web sites. The lesson plans, dubbed Give Them the Keys, is a cur riculum first introduced in 2002 that has been updated to include standardized lesson plans which include common core standards, technology standards, leveled activities and assessments. The lessons are organized by units, so teachers can pick and choose what works in conjunction with their cur riculum and students. Each unit includes several lessons that can be taught consecutively or used inde pendently. Each lesson is designed to include instructional objec tives, applicable standards, a list of materials, an anticipa tory set, instructional pro cedures, a formative assess ment for each lesson within a unit and other resources associated with that particu lar lesson, if applicable. dards for the singing of the national anthem with a pos sible fine for failure to meet those standards. Holdman and Mrvan are now supporting S.B. 92, authored by Sen. She returned to Indiana The American Press Institute and the News paper Association of America Foundation will merge to create a new organization focused on meeting newspapers' multimedia training and development needs. The boards of direc tors of both organizations have approved the merger agreement. Over the course of the next several months, lead in 2001 and worked for a year for the Bloomfield Evening News before being hired by The Herald-Times in 2002. Before moving to a digital role at The Herald- Times, she was respon sible for several differ ent beats as a reporter, including city govern ment, public education and an experimental youth beat. She was editor of INstride magazine, cross trained as a copy editor and has been involved in the paper's digital efforts for about four years. Newspaper organizations merge ership of the new entity will map out the specifics of integrating existing API and NAA Foundation programs into the new organization. Organizational and related details will be addressed through a review process under the direction of a board of governance that will be drawn from the NAA Foundation and API boards.
