Medicare will cover one screening per year. This screening is for adults with Medicare, Alcohol Misuse Screening & Counseling including pregnant women who misuse alcohol but are not alcohol-dependent. People who screen positive can get up to four brief face-to-face counseling sessions with a quali- fied primary doctor or provider. If the person is on Original Medicare, they will have to pay nothing. As of Jan. 1, 2012, if they are in a Medicare Advantage plan, the plan cannot charge them for this service as long as they see an "in-network" provider. If the person was covered by a Medicare Advantage plan in 2011, there may have been copayments or a deductible for this screening if conducted between the dates of Oct. 14 and Dec. 31, 2011. Obesity Screening & Counseling If a beneficiary has a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, Medicare will now cover intensive behavioral counseling for obesity furnished by a qualified primary care physician or other primary care provider and in a primary care setting. There will be no copayments for the counseling under Original Medicare. Persons covered under a Medicare Advantage plan will need to check with their plan to determine if there are any copayments for cal- endar year 2012. Medicare will cover: • One face-to-face visit every week for the first month; • One face-to-face visit every other week for months 2 – 6; • One face to face visit every month for months 7 – 12, if the beneficiary meets the 3 kg (6.6 pounds) weight loss requirement. At the six-month visit, a reassessment of obesity and a determination of the amount of weight loss must be conducted by the physician/provider. To be eligible for additional face-to-face visits occurring once a month for an additional six months, the beneficiary must have a reduction in weight of at least 3 kg over the course of the first six months of intensive therapy.
