Freedom Communications, based in Irvine, Calif., has owned the 6,500-circulation paper since 1973. The Tribune has been print- ed for several years at the Home News printing plant off Interstate 65 in Columbus. Home News is a family- owned multimedia company, publishing and owning news- papers, magazines, websites and specialty publications. The media group has been owned by the same family since 1872. Home News is the parent company of The Republic (Columbus,) the Daily Journal (Franklin), the Brown County Democrat (Nashville), the Daily Repor- ter (Greenfield) and the Times-Post (Pendleton). Home News President Jeff Brown said the Tribune fits a cluster operating model because it is in a contiguous market. Clustering will allow for some sharing of resources with other Home News papers, Brown said, but the Tribune's emphasis will remain on reporting local events, telling personal sto- ries, serving its watchdog role and promoting the commu- nity. – Home News Enterprises Nominate for Sunshine Week awards An expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., is up for grabs for someone who fights for transparency in govern- ment. To recognize people who make a difference in their communities by insisting on open government, Sunshine Week seeks nominations for its annual Local Hero awards. Sunshine Week 2012, to be celebrated March 11-17, is co- sponsored this year by the Am erican Society of News Editors and the Reporters Com - mittee for Freedom of the Press. All Local Hero nominations must be received no later than Feb. 20. Visit sunshine- week.org and click on "Local Heroes" to fill out a nomina- tion form. The 2012 Local Hero win- ner will be honored with an expense-paid trip to the ASNE annual convention in Washington, D.C., on April 2-4. Second- and third-place winners will receive $500 and $250, respectively. New this year is the addi- tion of nominee videos to the selection process. Gloria Howell of Stevenson, Wash., won the 2011 Sun- shine Week Local Hero award. She forced disclosure of public records that revealed corruption in the county auditor's office, lead- ing to the auditor's resigna- tion. Spearheaded by ASNE in 2005, Sunshine Week has quickly grown beyond a func- tion for news organizations to include students, teachers, private citizens, librarians, civic leaders, public officials, bloggers and a variety of non- profit groups and associations. She claimed both options impose an undue financial burden on local government. Key pointed out that Cook's association previously requested the website option it now opposes. The amendment approved Jan. 17 spells out that a law- suit can't be filed while a gov- ernment unit awaits a public access counselor opinion on a records request.
