By Eric Oliver Enterprise Staff OCONOMOWOC — As the month of June begins, and temperatures start to rise, outdoor workouts are a popular option for many people. Three businesses in Oconomowoc are offering unique opportunities when it comes to getting a work- out in during the summer. YMCA at Pabst Farms, 1750 E. Valley Road Health and Wellness Director Tammy Foltz said summer is the perfect time to take advantage of the outdoors, no matter the level of activity. "If you are getting active, there are so many options to help keep things exciting and get you on the road to better health," Foltz said. "The body and mind both need change sometimes — changes that will inevitably make us stronger and we might even find them to be new ways to work out." Foltz said the standard for exercise is to get 30 min- utes a day of moderate exercise, most days of the week. She recommended the Lake Country and Glacial Drumlin bike paths and Lapham Peak and Nashotah parks for run- ning, walking and biking. When it comes to working out in the hotter and more humid conditions of sum- mer, Foltz listed some safe- ty guidelines. Avoid exercising between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Choose shaded trails or pathways Stay hydrated by drink- ing one to two glasses of water before heading out and carry water with if exercising for more than 30 minutes. The YMCA has a few classes and activities to offer members as well. HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) Monday and Thursday 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., held outdoors Stroller Fitness (for mom's with baby in stroller) Thursday 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., held outdoors Flyer's running group, Wednesday 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 7:30 a.m. Indoor strength train- ing, TRX, Small Group Per- sonal Training and Body Pump training The Y also has a 10-week- long summer running club for kids ages 10 to 17, which will train kids to partici- pate in 5K races while putting in miles in prepara- tion for fall cross country. The club will meet Mon- days, Wednesdays and Fri- days from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Foltz also recommended an outdoor workout good for people of any skill level. Burpees — 10 Jump squats — 10 Push ups (full or knees grounded) — 10 Ab crunches — 10 Skipping — 100 normal skips Repeat for 30 minutes Boards and More, 124 E.Wisconsin Ave., in the back of Roots Coffee Bar Mitch Pelsue owns Boards and More paddle- boarding. The alternative fitness experience provides a workout for individuals of any age. Pelsue has a vari- ety of classes planned for the summer. Paddleboard rentals are available by the hour, two hours, half-day or full day for $20, $40, $50 and $60 respectively. Pelsue is offering stand- up paddleboarding yoga and fitness classes as well. The class schedule is: 6 p.m. Tuesday 8:30 a.m. Wednesday 12:30 p.m .Saturday Go to www.boardsand- more.net for more details on the classes and all stand- up paddleboarding offer- ings. For people who are hesi- tant to try out paddleboard- ing, Pelsue compared it to riding a bike. "Anybody can learn it," Pelsue said. "I just sold a paddleboard to a couple in their 70s. Almost anybody can do it. It's not something that's extremely difficult; you just need to get out there and do it." Pelsue said anybody who likes to exercise will love paddleboarding, and he added the worst thing that can happen is falling in the lake. "Even if you fall in, so what?" Pelsue said. "You just get up and get back up again." Parker's Place Fitness, 36105 E. Wisconsin Ave Kevin Ellis, owner of Parker's Place Fitness, has a variety of one-hour classes planned for the summer. Every Monday, Wednes- day and Friday at 5:45 a.m. Parker's Place has a boot camp class. At 4 p.m. it has a weight training class. Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. the gym holds a class where excercise is the main topic of discussion. Ellis' tip for people look- ing to get in shape this summer is take it slow. "Remember it is a marathon, not a sprint and be patient," Ellis said. Wisconsin Ave. OCONOMOWOC — More than 800 students from Nature Hill Intermediate School in Oconomowoc are set to run the distance Fri- day, taking part in the school's second annual Fun Run/Walk. The goal of the run is to raise at least $10,000 in pledges to support the NHI Parent Teacher Organiza- tion. This is the only fundraiser of the year for the PTO and all funds raised stay at the school. Money raised for this event will be used to fund class- room projects, support stu- dent learning and improve playground equipment. During the run each grade level will run a one- mile route in the field behind NHI. Along the way, students pass sponsored lane markers and cross the finish line through a bal- loon archway with the encouragement of the Kle- ment's Famous Racing Sausages.
