Personally, I fi nd all of this sickening and out of touch with reality. I have an uncle who proudly served on the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for over twenty-fi ve years and would rarely talk of his job, but only considered it to be a way to serve his community. There are "bad apples" in every profession, but it is my opinion that the larger majority of local, county and state police offi cers are men and women who serve with integrity and honor. Each day our local, county and state police accept the diffi cult task of enforcing the laws of our society. When I was young, my parents taught me to respect and obey those who wear the uniform. They taught me that the police were the "good guys". It is interesting to hear news story after news story about the rights of perpetrators, but very seldom do we hear or read a story about those who put their life on the line each working day. After comparing the median salary of law enforcement offi cials with other professions, you would come to the conclusion that they don't do it for the money. My uncle would say that the reason he served was that he wanted to make a difference in the world. As a funeral director, I appreciate the ability to call on our local law enforcement when help is needed and the privilege of funeral procession escorts provided for traffi c safety. I teach my children to revere our law enforcement and to appreciate the job they do. For those who are critical of the police, the next time someone is breaking into your house in the middle of the night or you fi nd yourself in a dangerous situation call a news reporter, a politician or an activist and see who shows up fi rst to help.
