Page 10 - Rutherford Weekly 828-248-1408 www.rutherfordweekly.com Thursday, June 4-June 10, 2015 OUTDOOR TRUTHS This time of year I always try catching some pan fi sh. I really enjoy this slow, unhurried outdoor activity. It's especially good after managing the deadlines of deer and turkey seasons, and an oc- casional bass tournament. There are no seasons for bluegill and crappie. If today is unsuccessful maybe I'll go tomorrow; or maybe not. And there is nothing like fried fi sh from these varieties. Yes, fried. I remember the days when there was no such a thing as calories, carbohydrates, and cholesterol. At least I didn't know there was. Now it seems anything that is fried is bad for me. I really wish I could fry the guy who found that out. He's prob- ably a vegetarian too! Which I heard is an old Indian word for "bad hunter." But, it looks like he's right. And I really hate that. Have you ever noticed that you can put anything in a pan of hot grease and it will come out tasting good? When I was young my momma saved grease just for frying things. That's what that ceramic jar on the stove was for. And how many of you can remember "killing" some fresh lettuce and onions in bacon grease and following that up with a piece of fried corn- bread with real butter on it? Try to fi nd that on somebody's menu today. No, today if we eat lettuce and onions it will be on a salad with a tablespoon of some kind of fat free dressing. And that cornbread turned into a club cracker. No wonder the crime level has escalated in America! I'd be mad too if some- body swapped my cornbread for a cracker! And I just read the other day that obesity in America has reached epidemic levels. Why? I don't know. But I know that it wasn't that way when I had my jar of grease on the stove! Have you ever noticed when grease is put in food it holds that particular food together? It doesn't matter if it's cake or hamburger; grease holds it to- gether. Now I think there's a great parallel here that we need to see. Have you noticed how our world is falling apart? Yep, that's right. It happened when we took the grease out. Oh, the ramblings of those who hate to diet. By By Gary Miller Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ GARY MILLER gary@outdoortruths.org ~ www.outdoortruths.org The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will open 31 trout streams and two lakes classifi ed as delayed-harvest trout waters under hatchery-supported regulations on June 6. From 6 a.m. until 11:59 a.m. on June 6, delayed-harvest trout waters are open only to anglers 15 years old and younger. At noon, waters open to all anglers. Delayed-harvest waters will stay open under hatchery- supported regulations through Sept. 30. During this time, anglers can keep up to seven trout per day — with no bait restrictions and no minimum size limits. The Wildlife Commission stocks delayed-harvest trout waters in the fall and spring with high densities of trout to increase anglers' chances of catching trout. When summer arrives, waters become too warm for trout to survive so the Commission opens delayed-harvest streams and lakes to harvest. Delayed-harvest trout waters are posted with diamond-shaped, black-and-white signs. The Commission established the youth-only fi shing time frame on the morning of June 6 to promote trout fi shing among young anglers and to provide special opportunities for young anglers to catch and keep fi sh. The Commission also is providing youth-only fi shing opportunities throughout the state in late May through mid- June by supporting nearly 40 kids' fi shing events, as part of National Fishing and Boating Week. Anglers ages 16 and older need an inland fi shing license and a special trout fi shing privilege, which is included in the comprehensive and sportsman licenses, to fi sh in all public mountain trout waters, including delayed-harvest waters. Purchase licenses by: Going online, www.ncwildlife.org, Calling 1-888-2HUNTFISH (1- 888-248-6834), or Visiting one of more than 1,000 Wildlife Service Agents located across the state. For more information on trout fi shing, including a list of delayed-harvest trout waters, regulation information and trout maps, visit www.ncwildlife.org/fi shing/trout.
