Rutherford County cancer survivors were honored May 26 during the 2015 Relay for Life of Rutherford County Survivor Dinner. Relay for Life Volunteer Maria Hunnicutt welcomed those in attendance, saying that the evening was for celebrating individual journeys, hope and friends. In addition to having dinner and getting their survivor T-shirts, those in attendance heard from one of their own. "There are 13 million cancer survivors in the United States … and I am extremely proud to be a part of that group," said Christi Butler. Butler continues to undergo chemotherapy treatments for Thymoma B4. Butler described that when she left her job on a February afternoon in 2011, she never imagined she was "leaving my students and my career behind." Butler said having cancer has been "the battle of my life," and after being diagnosed her doctor told her not to research the disease online. "But my family did," she said. It was through researching thymic cancer that her father came across a physician whose own story of cancer very closely matched Butler's. Through contact with this cancer patient, Butler learned about clinical trials being offered through the National Institute of Health. Butler has taken part in fi ve different clinical trials, one of which shrank the tumors in her body 70 percent. Through her journey with cancer, Butler explained that she has become an advocate for right to try laws. Right to try laws allow patients a right to try clinical drug trials as a last resort. In closing, Butler said that with God and His courage and grace, she wouldn't be able to speak with the group that day. "Whatever the future holds, it is important to maintain our faith," she said. The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life will begin at 6pm. Friday, June 5, at the Charles Summey Park across from Forest City-Dunbar Elementary. Article Provided By: Allison Flynn, editorial coordinator, Rutherford Weekly Christi Butler, who has thymic cancer, addressed the more than 300 survivors who attended the 2015 Relay for Life of Rutherford County Survivor Dinner on May 26.
