Freedom to imagine summer and all of its possibilities. Freedom from school rules, to where only schools of fish rule. She spoke of the friendliness of islanders. Days of football and volleyball on the beach marked in the loose sand. And movies and miniature golf at night for entertainment. At day's end, after a shower, she would climb into a bed where some sand still remained on the sheets. She felt as if she were still on the beach reliving her day with the sound of the ocean dreaming her through the night. Freedom. The island brims with all kinds of artists who try to capture (and many times do) a piece of LBI in paintings and photographs: the lighthouse, a rusted bike at the beach, or a splendid sunrise or sunset. No subject is too small to be ignored, and sometimes the smallest, most ephemeral subject can create the strongest emotions, like Marjorie Amon's photograph and text of lingering raindrops and how they relate to relationships. Artists use all types of media, shells, sea glass, driftwood—the very elements common to this island—to create beautiful works of art. In my early twenties, I lived a few blocks from the ocean. Often during hard times I would walk to the beach and literally ask the sea questions about my life—hoping it would offer up answers that would wash ashore. Sometimes I would intuit the answer in a piece of seaweed, or an unusual shell, or the cry of a gull. It gave me the fortitude to do what I believed in. A wise woman, the Danish author Isak Dinesen (Out of Africa), once wrote, "The cure for any- thing is salt water—sweat, tears, or the sea." All three have worked for me.
