OUTDOOR TRUTHS My hunting has given way to fi shing. At one time I actually did more fi shing than hunting. But for the past several years it's been hard to keep me out of the woods. My fi shing has its extremes. I love the thrill of landing a big bass but I also love the serenity (and table fare) of catching pan fi sh. Recently I fi shed in a local bass tournament. The competition adds to the excitement. It's in the blood of every American male. It's been so long since I bass fi shed consistently that I'm not able to keep up with the latest and hottest bait. I have to rely on friends who are not too concerned about me catching too many of their prized fi sh. My memories of this type of fi shing go back to my early adult years. During those years it was a purple worm in the daylight hours and a black one at night. Crank baits and spinner baits were too expensive to purchase in numbers so I wormed. I fi g- ured if I couldn't catch a bass on a plastic worm it was simply because I had the wrong color. I'm still glad I learned that form of fi shing. It's still one of the best ways to catch bass, but I'm sure one of the reasons that it is so effective for me is because I have confi dence in it. Any fi sherman knows what an impor- tant part confi dence plays in fi shing with a particular bait. If you have no confi dence in what you're throwing you might as well be throwing a bare hook. Confi dence is important in all walks of life. It comes from knowledge and experience. In the case of my worm fi shing, I must know that it's supposed to work and I must have experi- enced catching fi sh on it in the past. These two things bring me confi dence for future trips. In the same way my knowledge and past experience with the Lord brings me confi dence in Him for the future. I know He is able to take care of my circumstance and I have seen Him do it in the past. The Bible says, "Do not cast away your confi dence, which has great reward." What a coincidence, that this verse uses the word "cast." I guess the Lord wanted us fi shermen to understand that the same con- fi dence we put in a particular bait, we can put, in Him – and even more. Wildlife R e s o u r c e s Commission, in partnership with Neuse Sport Shop, Trout Unlimited and the U.S. Forest Service, is supporting more than 30 kids' fi shing events in late May through mid-June. Download a list of events, most of which are free. People interested in attending an event should check the list frequently as more events are added. In addition to catching fi sh at an event, young anglers at participating events can enter a statewide drawing for a chance to win one of more than 150 fi shing-related prizes. The grand prize is a lifetime sportsman's license, which includes freshwater and saltwater fi shing privileges, as well as hunting privileges, donated by Neuse Sport Shop, located in Kinston. The fi rst prize is a lifetime freshwater fi shing license, donated by the N.C. State Council of Trout Unlimited. Neuse Sport Shop also is donating tackle boxes, rod-and-reel combos and spools of fi shing line, while the Wildlife Commission is donating prizes, such as fi shing towels, playing cards and mini-tackle boxes. Local sponsors for many events will provide prizes and gifts to registered participants as well. The Wildlife Commission will conduct the drawing for prizes at the end of June and will publish a list of winners on its website, www.ncwildlife.org, in July. The Commission also is stocking fi sh at many of the sites before the events to give participants a better chance of catching fi sh.
