Williams After 35 years tending to the service needs of everything from BMW's to Buicks, I've picked up a few nuggets of automotive wit and wisdom which may make your motoring miles a little more merry. Service Do's and Don'ts When it's time to take the bucket of bolts down to the Kwikee Loob or to the dealership Taj MaGarage for its checkup or to fi nd out what's making that rattly-jingly noise on left hand- ed uphill turns or some such, it pays to do a little planning. Do: choose a service provider wisely. Are they knowledgeable about your make and model? Look for good signs, like awards and certifi cates they have earned, clean shop and custom- er areas, and a friendly smile. Do they offer warranties on parts or labor? Don't: go to the guy who has the same couple dozen cars al- ways sitting around. Your car could be the next one to join the collection. If you can't fi nd a spot to stand or sit without touching something greasy, there's a good chance some of that stuff will end up on your seats or fl oor mats. Do: fi nd out what their reputa- tion is in advance. The Internet, which we know is always right, is one place to look, but take what you read with a grain of salt. Look for patterns among on-line reviews in sites such as Angie's List or others that may reveal underlying issues. Check the BBB website. Ask car-crazy friends and co-workers about their experiences or recommen- dations. Don't: Drop in uninvited. Good shops stay busy, so call in ad- vance or make an on-line ap- pointment. If they offer loaner cars, now's the time to request one. Do Take time when you check in to fully explain what you need done. Show the garage guy or gal any issues you have, like leaks or squeaks. Get estimates and agree on diagnostic fees in advance…and fi nd out when it should be done. Getting your car serviced isn't like going to Disneyland. But it doesn't have to be like get- ting teeth pulled (no offense meant to dentists!). Plan ahead, choose wisely, communicate completely, and take your tech- nician (that's what we call me- chanics now-a-days) a box of doughnuts. They love dough- nuts. Trust me.
