But with her family involved in the parade for about 35 years, Karen Armstrong knew it had a rich history. "We are the oldest running parade in the state," she said Tuesday, just days before the sesquicentennial version steps off at 2 p.m. Monday downtown. She was recently viewing pic- tures of the parade, marking the holiday once known as Decoration Day because of the tradition of maintaining veter- ans' gravestones. "It put everything in perspec- tive and how long a tradition this is and how fortunate our family is to be involved," Armstrong said. She and her brother, Brian Stys, who is on the Parade Committee, stepped up their roles after their father, Bill Stys, died in 2010. "What it means to me person- ally is from brother fighting brother in the Civil War to the children in Iraq today, we can take time to honor the dead by serving the living," Brian Stys said. "We should take time to remember all the things we enjoy on a daily basis because of their sacrifice." This year's parade marshal, World War II veteran Clayton Chipman, said, "The main objec- tive now is to remember and honor and to memorialize the fel- lows that gave up their lives, and that's important. It's still impor- tant to teach as much as we can and the parade is one way to do it. "These youngsters have to learn that what they have in the way of their life they have because so many gave their lives. Many didn't reach age 19. It's probably my mission," said Chipman, a former teacher and principal. After his retirement, he became active in veterans groups, becoming president for the 4th Marine Division — World War II on a national level.
