OUTDOOR TRUTHS I noticed my actions during a turkey hunt a few mornings ago. I had not heard a bird gobble for a few days, so there I was waiting again for that famil- iar sound. I always arrive just before daylight and make my way to a central place in order to be heard should I do a shock call and in order that I might hear the location of a bird should it choose to respond. Or sometimes I just wait silently and let the birds talk on their own. This was my position the other morning. I just stood and listened and then I sat and listened. As the sun began to rise, listening would now have to be fi ltered through other noises that might easily drown out the specifi c call I was listening for. Sometimes those other sounds are known to get a tom talking especially the caw of a crow or the shout of a rooster. Nothing seemed to stir the angst of any gobbler that morning. So I just waited as the morning grew older and refused the urge to muddy the air with my attempt to locate a bird. I decided to go to the place of my last encounter. I did so, called, and was met with the gobble I had come to hear. It was there all the time – silent. I was there all the time as well – patient. I wonder what would have happened if my silence had been replaced with noise and my patience had been replaced with activity. I'm pretty sure I know. As I stood atop that hill that morning I was reminded that many times by call to God has seemingly been met with si- lence. Many of those times I equated silence with absence and left too soon. Sometimes I determined that His silence meant that I needed to call louder and more frequent. This too I misinterpreted. God's silence is not His absence and it is also not His desire to hear more from me in order for Him to be convinced. Most of the time His silence is a test to see how my faith in Him has progressed. Not that He needs to know (He already does), but so that I might know if my trust is based on sight and sound or simply by the promises He has already given me. What should I do when I perceive His silence? I should do exactly what I did the other morning. Go to the place of my last encounter and wait. By By Gary Miller Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ GARY MILLER gary@outdoortruths.org ~ www.outdoortruths.org Enforcement offi cers with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will be conducting a litter awareness campaign at several Piedmont public access areas May 15-16, passing along a "pack it in, pack it out" message to visitors, as well as issuing citations for littering violations. Littering, a misdemeanor punishable by a minimum fi ne of $250 plus court costs, poses a problem at public boating access areas, fi shing areas and game lands across the state. Most of these areas are not staffed and provide unrestricted access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — factors that make it easy for people to leave trash without being caught and diffi cult for enforcement offi cers to catch offenders. "Patrolling these areas and catching litterbugs are diffi cult to do given that we have to catch them in the act," said Lt. Sam Craft with the Commission. "This requires hours of sitting and waiting for people to leave their trash behind before we can issue citations. "When our offi cers check individuals using these areas, they remind them to take their trash out with them. However, this only works to curtail littering when the offi cers are at these sites." "Because the vast majority of our public access areas have no trash receptacles, it's very important for visitors to adopt a 'pack it in, pack it out' mentality when they visit one of these areas," Craft said. "That is, anything they bring with them — beverages, food, fi shing line, whatever it may be, they need to take with them when they leave. "The Wildlife Commission provides these areas at no cost to anyone who wants to go hunting, fi shing, trapping, wildlife watching or just enjoy nature. These areas are your areas, but we need your help to keep them clean and safe for everyone to enjoy." Report violations anonymously by calling the Commission's toll- free wildlife violations number, 800-662-7137. As part of the agency's mission to provide the public with outdoor opportunities, the Wildlife Commission manages more than 2 million acres of public game land, owns or manages more than 220 boating access areas and approximately 196 public fi shing areas across North Carolina. Keeping these areas clean for the public can be time consuming for Commission staff, leaving them little time to perform other, more important work. This campaign isn't about issuing littering citations, but helping people realize that when they take their trash with them, it frees up our wildlife technicians to create more public access for hunters, boaters, anglers, and other outdoor enthusiasts, as well as to perform much-needed maintenance and habitat work, instead of picking up litter," Craft said.
