It's much the same course as it was 95 years ago, even though the routing was changed recently when the club house was built. But it hasn't gotten any less challenging. Playing 6271 yards from the tips, 5,735 from the white and 4,399 from the gold tees and 4,893 from the women's tees, it can meet whatever challenge you want. The course has long been the host of the high school sectional. The tight tree-lined course weaves its way through the park- like setting. The diabolical 587 yard multi- doglegged par five has been testing the accuracy of golfers for nearly a century. It, along with the 399 yard par four closing hole, provide stiff challenges for any golfer. There are also a variety of par threes ranging from the 192 yard par three 13th to the short 17th at 147 to 127 yards, but still tricky. Its greens are some of the firmest and fastest in southern Indiana. The Old Country Club has a beautiful new clubhouse that houses Slicers Bar and Grill. It can handle events, catering needs or your pre-, post- or during-round snack or meal needs. oakland City Country Club 1593 South West St., Oakland City 812-749-3923 Oakland City Country Club is open to the public for daily play. The par 35 nine hole course was built in 1947 and plays a variety length of holes. It slaps you in the face on the first tee with a long and narrow tee shot for the par five 500 yard hole. Then, it switches gears to a short par three on hole two that plays from 112 to 147 down hill, but often is a stressful par. The 395 yard par four, fourth hole requires driver off the tee. Oakland City's small firm and sloped greens require careful consideration for a low score. The sixth hole is a 145 to 169 all carry par three over water to a tiered green with multiple tees providing various angles and distances. When it plays into the wind, it can be a round breaker. For men, the course plays 5545 for par 35 for a 105 slope. While the women play 5,249 par 74. The women start the course with a rare par six 500 yard hole. The clubhouse has a bar and grill for all your snack and meal needs before, during or after your round. PrinCeton Country Club 2560 Old US 41, Princeton 812-779-7088 www.princetoncountryclub.org The Princeton Country Club is a traditional design golf course with small sloped greens. The nine-hole course plays between 2310 to 2,692 yards. The course is located on Old 41, due north of the high school. Nearly every hole has elevation changes, with most greens sloped front to back, requiring players to keep the ball below the hole. Several holes have either blind tee shots or blind approach shots as the course winds its way through rolling hills. A long par four, the 372 yard first and some tight short par four are made more difficult by elevation changes and blind shots providing a variety of challenges for all levels of golfers. The course slope for men is 129 and 125 for the senior tees, and 112 for women. Green fees can be had for as little as $ 9 on weekdays and $13 on weekends. ChristMas lake golF Course 1 Clubhouse Drive, Santa Claus 1-877-962-7465 • 812-544-2255 www.christmaslake.com Christmas Lake Golf Course was one of the first championship golf courses in southern Indiana, the idea of visionary Bill Koch. It was designed and built by national known architect Edmund Ault. Nearly 50 years later, Christmas Lake Golf Course is still taking golfers to their limits. One of their yearly events includes the Nightmare before Christmas tournament, which fea- tures the hardest pin and tee placements in early December. Rated by Golf Digest as one of the top 75 public golf courses in the country, Christ- mas Lake perennially provides a champion- ship challenge with great conditions and service. There are five sets of tees ranging from the tips at a gaudy 7,275 yards. It trickles down from there to the blue tees at 6,745, white at 6,243, green at 4,758 and red at 5,074. The slopes run from 136 for the gold, 130 for blue, 126 for white and 121 for both the green and women's red tees. The course starts off with a down hill 480 yard par four that is the number five handicap. The second hole is the course's toughest hole, a dog leg left 465 from the tips and 428 from the blue. Both require a long and accurate tee shot to avoid rough on the left and water on the right. The fair way and green have water all down the right side. The front nine is fairly flat, but the back nine plays up and down through the hills of Spencer County. The final hole is a par 3 with a water carry to the green from distances of 206 from the tips in 25 yard increments for the short tees. They have a full range of equipment, ac- cessories and clothing in the pro-shop, as well as a grill in the clubhouse, capable of holding large events. luCas oil golF Course at old english 139 N. Boss Lane, English 812-338-3748 www.lucasoilgolfcourse.com Indiana's hidden gem, Lucas Oil Golf Course, is located at Highway 64 and 237 in Old English, the area where the Town of English used to be located. In 1990, the town was flooded and eventually moved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The course was built in the hills and valleys of Old English, providing breathtaking views. Holes four and seven from the back tees offer magnificent views atop a 100 foot high cliff overlooking the valley. The course plays from 4,652 for women g lFer's guide g lFer's guide Featured Courses CONTINUED ON PAGE 41
