Later on, we stood on the front porch and watched the lighted paddleboat, River Lady, and its reflection glide down the river haloed in the faint sound of music and laugh- ter coming from on board. On another river a few miles north, the Metedeconk, a friend and I sat on his dock in Bricktown talking about the summer and upcoming events. He stared at the far bank across the river and remarked, "From a dis- tance, they look like a line of ants carrying little pieces of triangular leaves." Confusedly, I answered, "What?" "The pram sailboat regatta across the river." Looking up and staring for a few seconds, I agreed. Now whenever I see prams sailing in the distance, that image, day, and friend come to mind. In my early twenties, I lived a few blocks from the ocean. Often during hard times I would walk to the beach and literally ask the sea questions about my life—hoping it would offer up answers that would wash ashore. Sometimes I would intuit the answer in a piece of seaweed, or an unusual shell, or the cry of a gull. It gave me the fortitude to do what I believed in. A wise woman, the Danish author Isak Dinesen (Out of Africa), once wrote, "The cure for anything is salt water—sweat, tears, or the sea." All three have worked for me. u Frank Finale is the author of the books "To The Shore Once More, Volumes I & II" and "A Gull's Story, Parts 1, 2, and 3" as well as coeditor of the anthologies "Under A Gull's Wing" and "The Poets of New Jersey."
