Host families, said Denise Holland, director of corporate partnerships for the Owls, play a crucial role in summer collegiate baseball as many players come from other areas to play. As NCAA student athletes, Owls players are not allowed to accept pay for playing in a summer league, and as a result, leagues have traditionally relied on local families to house their players. "This summer we have players coming from as far away as California and Canada," Holland said. "Some will not have cars, so we always look for families who can host one or two players so that players can share transportation." Host families are only obligated to provide a spare bedroom and access to a bathroom and laundry facilities. Each player is responsible for their own food and transportation, although the host family may include the player in family meals and activities. Hosting an Owls player can be a rewarding experience for the host family, Holland said. Owls players are excellent role models for young children and teenagers, and are great company for the entire household. Often players and host families share a friendship that lasts well beyond the end of the season. "As a mother, I always would want for my children for someone to open their home to share while they were away," she said. The Owls will host a dinner for the host families and the players during the season and will be recognized at an Owls game.
