They have complicated social lives and behaviors, a good deal of which was derived from their wolf ancestors, and there are masters of adaptation, deeply attuned to humans, fitting into family situa- tions and conditions. Many people in this region live with at least one dog, and often up to five. Dogs who live on farms are primarily workers and herders, but their numbers are declining as the number of farms decline. Village dogs often live in groups, walking alongside their caretak- ers in the evening, sleeping on sofas and beds, eating scraps from the table. Dogs are pack animals, and they have adopted humans into their packs, doing what makes humans happy, sometimes put- Yet, just on the next ridge, coydogs can be heard in the evening, living a wild life just beyond us and our "pet" dogs. This exhibit is sometimes about how dogs live and work in our county, and sometimes about dogs in general. I hope that the citizens of Delaware County will enjoy the exhibit and that they will find it relates to them and their four-legged companions in a very real way.
