Barbie Gonzales, fit- ness manager of Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park — W229-N1420 West- wood Drive, City of Pewaukee — is helping adults bounce their way to a healthier lifestyle through a trampoline based workout called SkyRobics. An average workout can burn up to 1,000 calories, Gonzales said. Gonzales and a team of coaches offer an hour long class, four times a week which incorporates elements of popular workouts adapted for trampolines. Currently, the team at Sky Zone is in the middle of a spring challenge. They are offer- ing a package to take as many classes as possible for $150. The top three people who lose the high- est percentage of weight will be rewarded. "We try to make it fun and at the same time real- ly challenging," Gonzales said. Gonzales said her staff monitors the participants to make sure they're okay and adapt the program to avoid excessive bouncing. She also said participants are encouraged to work at their own pace. "Some of the exercises you can't do because of the bounce back," Gonza- les said. "We have to be very picky on what we can do." A doctor's opinion Director of Rehabilita- tion Services at Aurora Medical Center in Sum- mit Rebecca Susa urged slight caution before starting this or any other workout. Susa said NASA con- ducted a study on the effects of rebounding — exercising using minia- ture trampolines — and found the mini-trampo- lines were a lower impact option than any running activity. She also said working out on mini- trampolines is incredibly beneficial because of the benefits to the cardiovas- cular and lymphatic sys- tems. However, Susa said there has been no profes- sional research conduct- ed with the use of large trampolines in exercise. She predicted that some of the NASA data would be applicable, but the higher velocity created by the larger trampolines moves the injury spec- trum from overuse injuries to sprains and strains. Susa said wrist, ankle and knee injuries com- monly occur from the use of trampolines and she recommended checking with a physician before starting any physical activity. "In any activity you want to make sure you approach it safely and start out slow and make sure you're cleared by your physician or your health care professional and really look at things overall," Susa said. "A healthy lifestyle is exer- cise, looking at what you are eating and monitor- ing nutrition." Finally, Susa said to ease into any workout and avoid overdoing it. "If you do too much too soon and you feel sore ... you're reluctant to go back to it," Susa said. To participate in the Fitness Challenge visit Sky Zone in Waukesha or call 262.696.1600. Those are the words Abun- dant Joy Yoga & Wellness owner Karen Rudolph used to describe the vision of the health expo she is holding after the Lake Walk — a can- cer benefit sponsored by ProHealth Care — on May 2. A portion of the proceeds raised at the expo will be donated to the walk. The free expo will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oconomowoc Lakes Plaza, W359-N5002 Brown St. Rudolph said the quality of health care available to the residents of Lake Coun- try is second-to-none. She has held the expo annually for the last four years to increase the visibility of the organizations here. The annual expo will have 60 wellness practitioners and various booths repre- senting a full range of medicine options available to residents of Lake Coun- try. The expo will also have demonstrations and classes throughout the day. "We hope people take away more knowledge and just have a fun day," Rudolph said. The walk is one of three walks ProHealth Care holds to raise money for cancer prevention and research. Nicole Bessert, Annual Gift Officer for ProHealth Care Foundation, said the walk raises $400,000 to $500,000 every year that stays in the community. This year ProHealth Care added an option to directly contribute to fight breast cancer — something that used to be exclusive to the Waukesha River Walk. "We need those national organizations but to know that you're helping your neighbor I don't know if there is any better feeling," Bessert said.
