By Emily Hannemann News Graphic Correspondent MEQUON — It's often said that a good meal is the way to win a man's heart, but the persistence and generosity two Mequon boys have shown in their efforts to provide a good meal to those in need has won the hearts of many. Michael Marcus and Jake Coran, juniors at University School of Milwaukee, have founded the "Spare Change Campaign" in order to remodel the kitchen at Milwaukee's Guest House shelter. The boys started out at the house as volunteers and served food to the residents, but noticed most volunteers brought food to serve or made it themselves beforehand rather than using the kitchen at the home. They soon found out the reason why: The Guest House's kitchen was no larger than a closet, with a lack of adequate kitchen supplies and appliances necessary to cook quality meals. Thus, the boys decided to do something to improve the situation. They would raise money to completely remodel the Guest House's kitchen, increasing it in size and quality so that both volunteers and guests can prepare meals on-site and guests can learn about cooking at the home. "Building a new kitchen would bring many great advantages to the residents of the Guest House," Coran said. "Eating a home-cooked meal makes the residents feel more at home, and directly cooking the food promotes a healthy, independent lifestyle." They began their fundraising efforts in 2013 and tried multiple tactics to raise the $30,000 needed to complete the remodel. Originally, the boys placed change "houses" with facts about the Guest House at local small businesses, inviting community members to learn more about the cause and to donate their spare change.
