Annual dues fund 20 per- cent of HSPA's operating costs for expenses such as lobby- ing represen- tation before the Indiana legislature and state agencies, legal advice on media law issues and educational opportunities in public notice adver- tising, state access laws and other top- ics. In a letter Member dues help fund: • Representing newspaper inter ests before the Indiana legisla ture and state agencies. • Serving as a legal resource for member newspapers. • Representing newspapers before advertis ing agencies through HSPA's Midwest Adver tising Place ments service. to members, HSPA board of directors president Tim Timmons urged members to take advantage of the services the association provides. "We believe you will find the benefits your newspa- per receives from its HSPA affiliation outweigh the cost of membership," said Timmons, publisher of The Paper of Montgomery County (Crawfordsville) and The Times (Noblesville). HSPA services Publisher Published alternate Thursdays budgets easier to access online Government Anyone can research 2012 financial details The state has launched the second phase of a public access website that increases accessibility of local government finance information for Hoosiers. In its first phase, the online data col- lection system known as the Indiana Gateway for Government Units allowed local officials to submit 2012 budget forms electronically from July 1 to Nov. 3. As part of the second phase, the budget figures are now incorporated into an interactive research website, https://gateway.ifionline.org. Figures can be compared against other units and ana- lyzed per capita. Get free training for new sales reps Media gurus are predicting a better revenue year for news- papers in 2012. But opti- mism doesn't sell ads. So HSPA Foundation is providing member news- papers with free access to a practical program to increase the sales skills of new advertis- ing staff mem- bers. Media Sales Media Sales Basics The online train ing program for new newspaper advertising sales profes sionals will be available FREE for HSPA mem bers in 2012. Basics is an online training module targeted at new news- paper advertising sales profes- sionals – beginning advertis- ing sales reps and experienced sales reps from other fields. The Indiana Newspaper Advertising Executives Association board reviewed several programs and recom- mended Media Sales Basics, said Karen T. Braeckel, HSPA Foundation director. "We are excited to offer this training to our members," she said, noting both the HSPA and HSPA Foundation boards support the program. An unlimited number of employees at member news- papers can use Media Sales Basics, Braeckel said. The self-paced program Papers will receive details in the coming weeks.
