TV Media Weekly | March 7 - 13, 2015 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: I would like to know if Jessica Bowman, formerly on "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Wom- an," and Josh Bowman, from the TV show "Revenge," are brother and sister. A: Though they are about the same age and do look somewhat similar, Josh and Jessica Bowman hail from different continents and are not related. If you did want to see what a female version of Josh Bowman looks like, you could try seeking out old episodes of "Hollyoaks" or "The Cut," two British TV shows that featured his actual sister, Scarlett Bowman. She stayed in their native Eng- land to pursue an acting career, while Josh left for America. Not at first, though. His first screen appearance was in an epi- sode of the British kids' series "Genie in the House" in 2007. His first American role was in the failed 2010 pilot "Betwixt." However, the next pilot he did, for the ABC mystery-drama "Re- venge," was successful and made his move to the U.S. more or less permanent. Jessica Bowman, on the other hand, was born just a few hours north of Hollywood, in Walnut Creek, Calif. She got into acting much earli- er, and though she was just 15 when she joined the cast of "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" in 1995, it wasn't her first role. She first appeared in the 1993 direct-to-video comedy "Re- mote." Like Josh, her TV career got off to a sort of false start: She landed a lead role in the CBS drama "The Road Home" in 1994, but it was canceled after six episodes. Her next series-regular role was a little safer, joining "Dr. Quinn" after it had already been on for two hit seasons. Though her performance on that show won her all sorts of ac- claim, including two Young Artist Awards, her career sort of fizzled out shortly after "Dr. Quinn" end- ed in 1998. There were a couple of TV movies she did, including a "Dr. Quinn" continuation in 2001. Af- ter that, she's appeared in just three films, most recently in the 2011 short "Striker." Have a question? Hollywood Q&A By Andrew Warren TV Media W hen you're one of the world's top chefs, you don't have to de- mand the spotlight — the spotlight comes to you. Eric Ripert certainly deserves to be called one of the planet's top culinary masterminds. His New York City restaurant, Le Bernardin, was named one of the best res- taurants in the world by British magazine "Restaurant" and sits atop three coveted Michelin stars. Clearly, this French chef knows his food, and like so many great chefs these days, he's happy to share an inside view of what makes him tick. "Avec Eric," which aired on PBS for its first two seasons, has found itself a new home on the Cooking Channel. Airing Saturday morn- ings, it's an inside and intimate view of Ripert's constant search for culinary inspiration. The Emmy and James Beard Award-winning series follows the chef on his journeys for culinary inspiration around the world, and also lands closer to home when he takes us inside his own kitchen to cook up some delicious meals. This season, Ripert is headed to the land down under. Sydney, Aus- tralia, is renowned for its interna- tional dining scene, but that's far from the only thing he's looking to experience. The southern conti- nent has a wealth of ingredients and culinary traditions, from the indigenous foods of western Aus- tralia to the tasty fish that live in the Northern Territory (caught while fishing from a helicopter, of course), and Ripert is here to ex- perience as much as he can. Australia isn't the only exotic land he's visiting this season. He also has his sights set on the land of kimchi, the fermented vegeta- ble dish that's the iconic culinary symbol of Korea. Of course, kimchi isn't the only native food Ripert will be experi- encing in South Korea — al- though he will be learning a bit about how more than 150 variet- ies are produced. He'll also be checking out the gochujang (a hot pepper paste), trying some tradi- tional temple foods and even vis- iting the demilitarized zone be- tween North and South Korea to find some of the world's most sought-after ginseng. When you're one of the most respected chefs on the planet, the constant search for culinary inspi- ration seems to know no borders — including the borders between TV channels. Old fans and curious new ones can find "Avec Eric" air- ing Saturday mornings on the Cooking Channel.
