P. Williams It's a strange fact, but in today's cars, your safety depends on a collection of fabric "bags" and canisters fi lled with something akin to rocket fuel. Scary, isn't it? Scary, but true. Not that car manufacturers want you to think about it too much. You might have some reservations about hopping into something and being sur- rounded by stuff that can go "bang". Well, their intentions are good, and, except in the rarest of circumstances, very effective at protecting you from injury. You see, accidents are violent events that take place incredibly quickly. At 70 miles per hour, you are traveling over 100 feet per second in a cocoon of steel, glass and plastic. To pro- tect you, a network of sensors monitor vehicle movements, sending reports to control modules across shielded computer circuits. When dan- gerous deceleration occurs, as in a collision, sig- nals from sensors are interpreted by computers, and if programmed thresholds are exceeded, commands are sent to the appropriate airbags, where infl ators powered by powerful chemicals ignite. Gasses from the infl ators expand into woven bags, which create temporary cushions, absorbing the impact of the occupants before they come into contact with the steel, glass and plastic. Many models have specially designed seatbelts that use powerful springs or propellant charges to snug up against you. The net result of all this is a very fast, loud and smoky experience that may very well save your life, or at the very least protect you from serious injury. So, making sure that this system is up to the job of protecting you becomes a high prior- ity. Luckily, this doesn't require much effort. Number one airbag health tip: check the status warning lamps on the dash every time you drive. Any light staying on with a pictogram illustrat- ing an airbag or saying "SRS" is telling you the system has a problem and may not deploy when needed. Get to a qualifi ed repair shop or dealer and get the system checked quickly. Some man- ufacturers have extended warranties on restraint systems; check your warranty book, call or go online to get details. Use manufacturer's or NHTSA websites to check and see if your model is subject to any recalls or service bulletins for the airbags or seatbelts; you'll need your vehicle identifi cation number. Most importantly, if your system needs repair or an airbag replaced, make absolutely sure only new, genuine factory parts are used, and that all necessary components are replaced. Don't take chances or cut corners. Oh, and keep it between the lines and shiny side up! small town friendly BIG time results Classifi eds Open 24/7 Open late. Click thru. Open late. Click thru.
