6 Red Bluff 2015 Tehama Country Visitor Center The Sacramento River Discovery Center is open for short visits of a few hours, or extended tours with guided lec- tures at a small fee that must be pre-scheduled. Most of the research and displays at the center have been created by stu- dents and the community. People from many diverse agencies and organizations, represent- ing a broad-based com- munity effort, came together to create the Sacramento River Discovery Center to pro- mote understanding of the balance between the river, its watershed and the community. The 488-acre site is an out- door classroom at the Red Bluff Recreation Area and offers walk- ing trails through native habitats such as a riparian forest, flowering grasslands, wet- lands and oak woodlands. Locals appreciate the center for annual events like the Watershed Celebration, featuring a 5K and 10K run/walk and children's activities, held the third Saturday in May. There are also numer- ous community projects that the center encour- ages such as the high school's Regional Occupation Program, the summer camp from mid- June through the first week of August and the artwork that's for sale inside the center. The visitor's center is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center contains educational dis- plays and hands-on inter- pretive displays. The center also hosts monthly evening programs and an annual dinner meeting. The center is at the end of Sale Lane, two miles south of Red Bluff. More information is available at 527-1196. The visitor center, which was built and is operated by North Valley Services, offers motorists passing through Red Bluff a chance to get a taste of happenings in the county and out. The 5,000 square foot visitor center also provides vocational opportunities for those with disabilities. The visitor center aims to highlight local business- es and products. "We built upon the foun- dation laid out by the Branding Project and incorporate ideas from the community," CEO Lynn DeFreece said. The visitor center is fit- ted with interactive exhibits as well, such as a quiz that tests people's knowl- edge of agriculture throughout the county. The center is open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
