Soap Updates Jacqueline MacInnes Wood stars in "The Bold and the Beautiful" By Jacqui Wiens TV Media Daytime talk show queen Ellen DeGeneres is one powerful wom- an. The 57-year-old has hosted three of the biggest awards shows on multiple occasions — the Os- cars in 2006 and 2014, the Emmys in 2001 and 2005, and the Gram- mys in 1996 and 1997. She has 24 Daytime Emmys, one Primetime Emmy, three Critics' Choice Awards and more People's Choice Awards than you can shake a stick at. Her work on her hit daytime talk show, "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," has made her truly influential in every facet of television. The fact that her show is so pop- ular provides her and her writers the opportunity to try out a variety of different segments and ideas. Certain features become recurring parts of the show, and others can gain so much popularity that they eventually spin off into their own show. One such example is when she helped launch the careers of young British YouTube stars and cousins Sophia Grace Brownlee and Rosie McClelland after view- ing a video they posted online. The pair became the hosts of the fea- ture "Tea Time with Sophia Grace & Rosie" and acted as red carpet correspondents for "The Ellen De- Generes Show." Now, another highly successful "Ellen" skit is getting its own se- ries. Aptly titled "Repeat After Me," this half-hour reality series taps into a segment that's long been a staple on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," where celebrity guests are fed instructions through a remote earpiece in an ordinary situation, such as ordering coffee. The in- structions often create awkward — and hilarious — moments as both the celebrities and bystanders struggle to adapt to such outland- ish behavior and comments. Catch the premiere episode of this hid- den camera series when it airs Tuesday, Feb. 17, on ABC. It may be difficult to follow up the entertainment value DeGe- neres provides as a truly accom- plished comedian, but ABC has tapped another very funny lady to host "Repeat After Me." Wendi McLendon-Covey ("The Gold- bergs") takes the reins for this new reality series, and it is her naturally ridiculous improvisation-at-a-dis- tance that guests will have to act out. She's no slouch when it comes to comedy, either, as she's been in the biz for almost 15 years. McLendon-Covey first broke into acting in the 2001 short film "Henry and Marvin," and eventu- ally transitioned to TV, where she starred in shows such as "Reno 911!" and "Rules of Engage- ment." Her breakout role came on the silver screen, however, when she starred alongside fellow Groundlings Theater alums Kristen Wiig ("Arrested Development," "Saturday Night Live") and Melis- sa McCarthy ("Gilmore Girls," "Mike & Molly") in "Bridesmaids" (2011), and she's since starred in the hit ABC comedy "The Gold- bergs" as well as movies such as "Blended" (2014) and "What to Expect When You're Expecting" (2012). "Repeat After Me" will continue to push the envelope in the same manner as its "Ellen" inspiration. An early trailer for the pilot episode delivers some big laughs as it fea- tures "Grey's Anatomy" star Ellen Pompeo, who is, for reasons un- known, conducting a job interview with an unsuspecting candidate named Patrick. At McLendon-Cov- ey's instruction, Pompeo breaks into tears and starts wailing. When Patrick asks how he can help her, Pompeo is told to demand compli- ments — a request Patrick seems more than happy to oblige. Of course, there can be some misunderstandings between the instruction giver and the instruc- tion taker in situations like this. In the original "Ellen" segment, ce- lebrities would occasionally mis- hear an instruction and go com- pletely off the board, saying or do- ing something completely oppo- site to what was asked. When De- Generes sent David Beckham to Target, for example, she told him to reveal himself by saying that he was on a show called "Switch- eroo" and to yell the name of the show. Beckham misheard, and yelled out "Cheecheroo!" instead. These misheard quotes and de- layed responses only serve to add to the hilarity of the concept that "Repeat After Me" is built upon. Besides making the guest celebri- ties look a bit, well, insane, they also emphasize the fact that the show is essentially a more compli- cated version of the game Tele- phone, with downright foolish and comical results. "Repeat After Me" isn't just based off the original "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" sketch. The show comes from DeGeneres' pro- duction company, A Very Good Pro- duction, in association with Warner Horizon Television. DeGeneres her- self, as well as Mary Connelly, Ed Glavin, Andy Lassner, Kevin A. Le- man II, Jason Goldberg, James Breen and Jeff Kleeman all serve as executive producers on this new reality series. The concept has already been proven to be laugh-out-loud funny on Ellen DeGeneres' daytime talk show, and with McLendon-Covey taking over behind the mike for the hidden camera show, things are bound to get even more ridiculous.
