I think the best part of Halloween is dressing up in costume. When you're a kid, you get to be your favorite su- perhero or princess (and get candy from strangers! Yay!). Then, there's a dead zone where dressing up seems somewhat pointless _ middle school and high school, when you're too old to trick-or-treat and too young to booze it up as a sexy nurse/devil/Little Bo Peep. 2 O-Town Scene Oct. 27, 2011 Costumes have a whole new purpose as an adult. Some dressing up enthusiasts go down the trampy fill-in- the-blank route, some go with traditional horror themes and some get creative. All good in my book, but I get the biggest kick out of creative get-ups and pop culture fig- ures. (Remember a few years ago when Sarah Palins were everywhere?) I tend to go for pretty over gory or trampy _ Spring, a sunflower, a (ladylike) croco- dile hunter. This year, to accommodate a People Who Changed the World theme party, I'm toying with Mona Lisa, Betty Ford or Cleopatra, an old standby who's having a surge in popularity due to her recent best-selling biography. It really depends on which costume I can borrow and/or find by the weekend. Everybody loves a theme party. (Right?) Well, Hal- loween is as good of an excuse as any to throw one, which is exactly what several area venues are doing this weekend. We have compiled all of these parties, as well as other Halloween-related events, into a themed calendar, com- plete with our top five picks for unique events that pretty much guarantee a good time. We would love to attend all of these events, but we just can't. We're hoping to live vicari- ously through you, and that you'll share your Halloween photos of fun costumes with us, which we will post (if we have enough) in a gallery on our brand new website. That's right; we've moved on from our simple landing page and online flip book of the print edition. Our new website, launch- ing today, Oct. 27, at www. otownscene.com will pull ar- ticles out of our print edition so that readers can comment on individual stories and share them. This is a baby step. We will be tweaking the site to make it better, and eventually, we'll have reader polls, photo gal- leries, videos and contests, too. It's going to be a fun place to hang out online _ with or without a costume or party _ and we want it to be as user- friendly as possible.
