Modern Olderhood
Changing the
Conversation
T
he most challenging transition
I see is the one from life in the
family home to a smaller space,
assisted living, or when heirs sell a
home after the death of a parent.
There is so much more at stake
than a regular move, and it is often
experienced as a loss, and humans do
not like loss.
For the parent downsizing,
intellectually it is a great time to
simplify, lighten the burdens, reduce
the overhead. Heck, why pay for
heating and insurance on 2/3 of a
home you are not really using. It all
makes sense to the intellectual left
brain.
But we make decisions in the right
brain, the emotional half. There we
have to face the downward curve of
the arc of our life. We are heading into
the golden years, like it or not. Need
help with how to handle older parents,
a quibbling sibling, or your own
downsize? Let's meet.
