TV Media Weekly | January 31 - February 6, 2015 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: Is it true that the TV se- ries "Bitten" is based on a book? A: It's actually based on a se- ries of books, so the show has plenty of material to work with — which is good news since it's coming back for a new season. The werewolf drama is based on the "Pack" stories by Canadi- an author Kelley Armstrong, part of her larger "Otherworld" uni- verse. There are currently 29 "Pack" stories, five of which are novels, the rest being novellas and short stories. Most of the stories are cen- tered around a werewolf named Elena, who is also the main character of the "Bitten" TV se- ries. Elena is the only female werewolf in the world, though she resists her heritage and tries to live a normal, human life in Toronto (the series is produced in Canada). Armstrong says that interest in werewolves has a lot to do with a country's nature. "Almost any culture that has some kind of wild canine has a version of the werewolf myth," she told "The Globe and Mail" in a 2010 interview. The first novel in the series is called "Bitten" as well and was released in 2001. It was a hit, and her books have gotten more popular since, eventually land- ing her on the "New York Times" bestseller list. The show airs on the Space Channel in her native Canada and on Syfy in the U.S. Its first season was a hit on both net- works, and it's returning for an- other round this month. If its popularity keeps up, it will be the second of many, hence the need for all the books. The show has proved to be a fan favorite as well, which has, of course, pleased its producers. "We're absolutely thrilled with the tremendous support and enthusiasm from fans across social media since the debut of 'Bitten,'" said Prentiss Fraser, a senior vice-president of the show's production company, Entertainment One. "We look forward to working with the tal- ented cast and crew on another compelling season." Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com. Please include your name and town. Sure, some of us have more of one than others, but almost ev- eryone has their own favorite candies, sweet and treats. For years on the Food Net- work, "Unwrapped" brought viewers a behind-the-scenes look at how some of their favor- ite sweet snacks and guilty food pleasures are made, and now the show is relaunching on the Cooking Channel. "Unwrapped 2.0" is reviving the popular for- mat with its premiere Monday, Feb. 2, and not only is this re- launch on a new channel, but it also has an exciting new host. Alfonso Ribeiro takes over from "Unwrapped's" Marc Summers, and this TV star is no stranger to the screen. Most re- cently, he won the 19th season of "Dancing with the Stars," but before that, his biggest claim to fame was starring op- posite Will Smith in "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." Much like its predecessor, each episode of "Unwrapped 2.0" fol- lows Ribeiro as he explores some of the most loved food products on grocery store shelves. He goes behind the scenes, examining the history of the foods, exploring the companies producing them and talking to the people respon- sible for crafting the perfect taste experience. In one early episode, Ribeiro dives in head first with foods that are rolled. From fresh corn torti- llas to crunchy pecan log rolls, he takes us on a behind-the-scenes journey that ends with a look at the most ubiquitous roll of them all — the famous Tootsie Roll. More and more, consumers are interested in knowing ex- actly where the food they're eating comes from. "Un- wrapped 2.0" promises to be an entertaining and education- al exploration of the foods that millions of us eat day in and day out. If it's true that "you are what you eat," then "Unwrapped 2.0" might teach you a bit about yourself. The behind-the- scenes exploration of all things food premieres Monday, Feb. 2, on Cooking Channel.
