But alas, what goes around comes around, as the agent receives a phone call from Stark, whose name has been cleared due to Carter's actions, in- forming Flynn that Carter would be leading a new division: the Strate- gic Homeland Intervention, En- forcement and Logistics Division, better known as S.H.I.E.L.D. While many gained their first glimpse of the Carter character in the first "Captain America" mov- ie, some may recall her first ap- pearance in the comic book "Tales of Suspense #77," which was re- leased in 1966. Carter, originally known as "Agent 13," was initial- ly cast as a love interest of Cap- tain America in the Second World War. However, as time progressed, her character evolved tremen- dously, resulting in the more- than-capable, stalwart and para- mount female role model that she is today. "Audiences want to see wom- en that they can relate to ... wom- en that are strong and that they can look up to," said Atwell. "Even on my social media ac- counts, I've had lots of young girls and the parents of girls say that [Carter's] an inspiration. So it feels like a social responsibility to tell Peggy's story and also to just be part of that revolution." While she may not see eye to eye with them all, Carter is joined by many in the fight towards evil. Enver Gjokaj ("Rizzoli & Isles") stars as Daniel Sousa, a noble agent of the SSR who stands up for Carter when she's faced with countless cases of sexism. Chad Michael Murray ("One Tree Hill") plays Jack Thompson, a former WWII veteran now working for the SSR who's tasked with leading the investigation on Howard Stark. Fi- nally, Shea Whigham ("Boardwalk Empire") plays Roger Dooley, the chief of the SSR who, while obser- vant, is routinely tricked by Carter. Perhaps the greatest thing about "Agent Carter" is the arrival of a strong female lead who proves that sexism is a feeble attempt to undermine those just as able to complete any task with which they're presented. She's thwarted Nazis, founded a global protection agency and is now uncovering the potential of life beyond the stars, all before 1960. You won't want to miss Carter's crusade in a new epi- sode of Marvel's "Agent Carter," airing Tuesday, Feb. 3, on ABC.
