Soap Updates Joshua Morrow stars in "The Young and the Restless" By Jacqui Wiens TV Media Art attack: Graffiti has a less- than-favorable reputation amongst much of the population. Landowners pay to have hastily sprayed pieces of art removed from their walls, while passersby complain about unsightly "tags" on buildings and bridges. Despite the stigma, there are some truly talented artists involved in street art, and they are often invited to spruce up certain areas with their own brand of colorful decoration. Oxygen is bringing together 10 talented artists to compete for a $100,000 grand prize and the ex- posure that comes with winning a major competition in "Street Art Throwdown," premiering Tuesday, Feb. 3, on Oxygen. In the true spirit of the medium's origins, "Street Art Throwdown" won't feature artists standing around painting on canvases. Rather, the contestants will be pushed to the limit as they contend with obstacles while creating a va- riety of artistic pieces. Each episode will feature two challenges: a speedy "Hustle," where the artists are "confronted by environmental obstacles"; and the elimination "Throwdown," which involves cre- ating large compositions in out-of- reach areas and harsh conditions. "Street Art Throwdown" is host- ed and judged by internationally acclaimed artist Justin Bua. After graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, Bua had a successful commercial design career as well as passing on his expertise through a teaching position at the Universi- ty of Southern California. Bua has a clear passion for teaching and launched ArtistWorks in 2013 to provide an online classroom to as- piring artists. Fellow judge Lauren Wagner at- tended both Wagner College and Johns Hopkins University, obtain- ing a bachelor of science in arts ad- ministration and a master of arts in museum studies. Wagner uses her expertise to arrange exhibitions and help artists move forward in their careers. She is currently the director of Pop International Gal- leries, working to bridge the gap between street art and gallery pieces. Passion can only take you so far, but these artists have the hustle to take their artistic careers to the next level. Tune in to see all of the creative masterpieces and exhila- rating challenges when "Street Art Throwdown" premieres Tuesday, Feb. 3, on Oxygen. Geared up: Brits are known for their passion for automobiles, and many viewers on this side of the pond tune in to BBC car shows, such as the original and incredibly popular "Top Gear" and its Ameri- can counterpart. BBC America and the new BBC Brit are teaming up to create a new made-in-America car show with witty British hosts and all the insane challenges you could dream of. "Mud, Sweat and Gears" airs a new episode entitled "De- molition" on Monday, Feb. 2, on BBC America. Gearhead hosts Tom "Wookie" Ford and Johnny Smith, who previ- ously appeared as co-hosts on "Fifth Gear," will assume com- mand of a two-person team of auto enthusiasts who transform an everyday vehicle into a fun stunt car designed to tackle the epi- sode's challenges in California. With only 24 hours to remake their cars, the winner will forever have bragging rights, while the loser's vehicle will be destroyed — if the challenges don't destroy it first. Each hour-long episode of "Mud, Sweat and Gears" will tack- le a different theme, including "Truck O'War," "Carmageddon" and "Carcade." The teams will have to select an appropriate car to transform before racing, swerv- ing and jumping to the finish line. It's the only show to attempt to an- swer the questions: "Which car would make the best sumo wres- tler?" and "Is the Pontiac Aztek the ultimate post-apocalyptic vehi- cle?" BBC America is filling out its "Top Gear"-inspired Monday night lineup with shows to com- plement the witty and lighthearted series. Even if you're not a car fan, you'll want to check out a new, de- molition-themed episode of "Mud, Sweat and Gears," airing Monday, Feb. 2, on BBC America.
