TV Media Weekly | January 24 - 30, 2015 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: "The Librarians" is awe- some! Noah lights up the screen. But did I miss some- thing? Did TNT cancel "Fall- ing Skies"? A: There are actually two things going on here. You're right that Noah Wyle seems to have too much to do, starring in two different shows. And you're also right that TNT canceled "Falling Skies." However, these two things are not related. Though Wyle appears to be pulling double-time, starring on two different shows, both on TNT, in fact his "Librarians" schedule has been precisely tai- lored to suit his pre-existing "Falling Skies" commitments. "He was going to be in this for as much as he could," ex- plained "Librarians" creator John Rogers in an interview with Collider.com. "We would have loved to have him more, and he would have loved to do it more, but we slammed right up against his shooting sched- ule." That is to say that he's a part- time star of "The Librarians," but a full-time star of "Falling Skies." At least for now. The "shooting schedule" Rogers refers to is that of the fifth season of "Falling Skies," which also happens to be its last. It's slated to air this sum- mer. What that means for his role in "The Librarians" remains to be seen. He's already committed to shooting the miniseries "To Appomattox" when he finishes "Falling Skies," and he recently wrapped filming on a big-screen film, the independent drama "The World Made Straight," suggesting a potential turn away from series TV. However, there's no sign of his character going away on "The Librarians." Indeed, Rogers says that Wyle is almost irrationally committed to sticking with it. The series is based on a trilo- gy of TV movies in which he starred as Flynn Carsen, a mild- mannered librarian charged with defending a collection of mystical treasures. "He doesn't want to give that up. He loves that character," Rogers said. Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com. Please include your name and town. Oh sure, like most people I have my go-to places, my local favorites down the street and the joints that I always make sure I stop at when I travel. There's that thrill of the un- known, though, walking through the door of a newly opened eat- ery. Like a 16th-century explorer striking out with only a vague idea of what to expect, never knowing if I'm about to experi- ence the best meal of my life or suffer through the worst service I've ever encountered. Well, apparently, Tom Colic- chio has a thing for new restau- rants, too. The acclaimed chef, restaurateur and host of Bravo's "Top Chef" launched a new se- ries on the cable channel last week, and while in "Top Chef" he's looking for — well — the best chef, in this one, he's hunt- ing down the best new restau- rant he can find. In fact, that's even the name of the show. "Best New Restau- rant" airs Wednesday nights, and if the premiere was any indica- tion, it's going to be a fun ride. Along with Maggie Nemser (CEO of foodie website Black- boardEats.com) and Jeffrey Zurofsky (co-founder of gourmet sandwich restaurant Witchcraft), each episode will find Colicchio putting two restaurants through their paces to determine which one really stands out. First, the trio will descend on each restaurant without notice with 30 hungry diners in tow to see how the restaurant handles a suddenly packed house. Of course, since Colicchio is there, everyone on staff will be on their best behavior. That's why, for the second test, he sends in a pair of undercover diners with hidden cameras to get the real guest's perspective. Finally, once all that is said and done, the two competing restaurants will bring their staff together in a neutral location where they'll serve a group of VIP diners without the comfort- able familiarity of their home restaurant. It's all in the spirit of friendly competition, but there's a lot on the line for the restaurants here, too. The winner of the overall competition at the end of the season will win $100,000, a fea- ture in "Bon Appétit" magazine and even a featured spot at the Vegas Uncork'd by Bon Appétit 2015 food festival. It's that kind of recognition that can really put a new restau- rant on the map and ensure its success for many meals to come. "Best New Restaurant" currently airs Wednesday nights on Bravo.
