January 23, 2015 • Milwaukee County Post • 11 The Titanic finished better than the Packers. Discount double choke. That's enough. The Packers lost to Seattle because players and coaches did- n't believe that Russell Wilson was good enough to pull off an incredible comeback given his horrible play for most of the game. It's that simple. Let's start with the play call- ing of Mike McCarthy in the fourth quarter. In the possessions before and after the Morgan Burnett interception, the Packers ran the ball five of six plays. It was conservative play calling and appropriate play calling given the circumstances. The Packers' defense had dominanted, and the offense had been average at best. McCarthy had an MVP quar- terback who had a quarterback rating of 50 for the day. And with a good offensive line, it was possi- ble that they could run the ball. McCarthy wasn't scared; he was smart. Wilson had a quarterback rating of zero. They had not scored a single point with their offense unit. In McCarthy's mind, the Packers could not lose the game if they avoided an o f f e n s i v e turnover. He didn't believe that Wilson could turn from the bad Jay Cutler into Joe M o n t a n a . M c C a r t h y also didn't fac- tor in a spe- cial teams blunder but even if he had, he would have expected his defense to make things difficult for Cutler-Wilson. The bottom line: If the Packers had been facing Tom Brady with four interceptions, McCarthy would have more aggressive in his play calling. And if the Packers had been playing against Tom Brady last Sunday, Burnett would not have gone to the ground after his fourth-quarter interception. He thought the game was over. Julius Peppers had the same belief. That is why he told Burnett to go to the ground. I have never seen a defen- sive back go the ground after a turnover with so much time left in the game. NEVER. Some play- ers have continued with a run- back when they should have hit the ground because their offense could run out the clock with kneel-downs. What the hell were Burnett and Peppers thinking? They, like McCarthy, were thinking the game was over unless Burnett fumbled the ball back on the interception. They thought there was no way Wilson could play well enough with the time remaining to beat the Packers. They owned Wilson on that day. They weren't counting on anything from the Packers' offense because they didn't need the help. The Packers lost the game because of a major blunder by Brandon Bostick. It was the biggest mistake in a long list of late-game screwups. It would not have mattered if others hadn't underestimated the ability of Wilson. One more thing. How did Ha Ha Clinton-Dix mess up the two- point conversion? He clearly mistimed his jump, but he seemed incapable of adjusting to his mistake. He's an NFL athlete, but he looked more like a half- time contestant on that play. Aaron Rodgers would have had a great game-winning drive, and Mason Crosby would have been the hero. One more thing on McCarthy's play calling and percentage play- ing. He might also have been counting on Clay Matthews play- ing at the end of regulation. He was on the sideline when the Seahawks scored their two fourth-quarter touchdowns. After the game, he said he was tired. What? If I wasn't a high fan of his play, I would wonder if it was the wrong time of the month. TIRED?
