Soap Updates Jacob Young stars in "The Bold and the Beautiful" By Jacqui Wiens TV Media Guardians in the dark: First responders have some of the toughest jobs in the world, and their ever-changing workplaces have inspired many different television series, from the medi- cal drama "ER" to the long-run- ning police procedural "CSI" and its many spinoffs, as well as a plethora of newer shows. Crime and criminal investiga- tion has also made its way into reality television, with "Cops" airing 25 seasons on Fox before being acquired by Spike. Now, A&E is taking its own turn at showing the life of cops, fire- fighters and paramedics with "Nightwatch," premiering Thurs- day, Jan. 22, on the cabler. "Nightwatch's" executive pro- ducer Dick Wolf alone has been behind upwards of 10 crime-re- lated TV shows, including "Mi- ami Vice," the various "Law & Order" franchises and relatively new shows "Chicago P.D." and "Chicago Fire." This latest ven- ture is a bit of a change as it lies entirely within the realm of reali- ty, unlike Wolf's previous proj- ects, and the crews in "Night- watch" won't have tidy plot lines set out for them. They will also be unlikely to solve crimes with the inhuman speed and deadly accu- racy as their counterparts, who nearly always find the perpetra- tor within one episode. While every shift as a first re- sponder is nerve-racking, no time is as unpredictable as the 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. overnight shift. With us- ers of both legal and illegal drugs roaming the streets, reduced visi- bility on the roads, and fewer by- standers to discourage bad be- havior, there's no telling what the next call might be. It is into this dark world of tension that A&E is taking the cameras to record the challenges faced by New Or- leans' emergency services. In the first of nine hour-long episodes, "Nightwatch" follows EMTs who work to save the life of a gunshot victim, as well as police officers who begin inves- tigating the shooter's identity. In such a busy city, the calls never stop, and the show also features an impaired driver who insists he is fine, as well as an investi- gation into a suspected arson. Whether you've been enjoy- ing procedurals for years or have never seen an episode, this real-life offering might be just the thing for you. Take a look inside the perilous lives of first responders when the series premiere of "Nightwatch" airs Thursday, Jan. 22, on A&E. Heating up: Christina Milian may be a Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter, and she may have seen her fair share of screen time in movies such as "Be Cool" (2005) and "Pulse" (2006), but she says her family always comes first in her life, describing them as her "every- thing" in a 2002 BBC interview. Her professional career was put on hold in 2009 when the R&B artist got pregnant with her daughter. Now, Milian brings her exciting story to tele- vision in the new series "Chris- tina Milian Turned Up" premier- ing Sunday, Jan. 18, on E!, and she's looking forward to shar- ing an inside look into her ca- reer, relationships and love life with her fans. "Deep inside I always felt something like this was gonna happen," she said in an inter- view with E! Online. "Kind of just letting people get to know me personally, so that's the big- gest thing — letting your guard down and letting people in." Catch up with Milian as she brings people into her profes- sional and personal life when "Christina Milian Turned Up" premieres Sunday, Jan. 18, on E!
