Soap Updates Tyler Christopher stars in "General Hospital" By Meagan Sylvester TV Media 'Lovers' quarrel: Just when you thought you were on a one- track road to the "friend zone," Bravo is about to shake things up with an all-new, hour-long docu- series that chronicles the exploits of 10 friends who decide — against their better judgment, per- haps — to take a leap of faith and become romantically involved. Viewers can now explore an all- new theme with "Friends to Lov- ers" premiering Monday, Jan. 12, on Bravo, with a particular age-old question: Can dating your best friend be the key to lifelong bliss or a recipe for tumultuous disaster? According to early reviews of this intimate social experiment, not every twosome will be destined for a happily-ever-after scenario. Cam- eras will, however, be there every step of the way to catch those awkward and intense moments between lovers and wannabe lov- ers soon to make new discoveries about themselves and a former "chum." Of course, there are some who firmly believe in a friend-first ap- proach, arguing that in order to sustain healthy partnerships, a kind of mutual comaradery is needed before taking the next step. But American psychologist Fredric Neuman says when intima- cy is suddenly thrown into the equation, people tend to "feel more intensely about each other ... [Creating] more of a potential for bitterness if the relationship breaks up," he wrote for PsychologyTo- day.com in June 2013. All tension aside, it's regrettably not safe to say whether it's intima- cy, per se, that creates underlying tensions between friend-zone swingers. These are just some of the questions viewers will have the pleasure (or displeasure) of wit- nessing on the program "'Friends to Lovers' is a guaran- teed roller-coaster ride that will make you cringe from awkward- ness one second while having you believe in true love the next," said Lara Spotts, vice-president of de- velopment at Bravo Media. "With real stakes, drama and romance, these couples' journeys will contin- ue to keep ... viewers engaged and guessing whether these twosomes are meant to be." Whether you side with the "love at first sight" scenario or a slow- growing partnership, viewers can catch all of the drama when "Friends to Lovers" premieres Monday, Jan. 12, on Bravo. A good set of genes: Familial ties to notorious gangsters, centu- ry-old earthquakes, war heroes and the Gold Rush — all were ex- plored in season 1 of "Genealogy Roadshow," a part-reality, part-de- tective series dedicated to the dis- covery of ancestral secrets in America. While season 1 took to the streets of Nashville, Detroit, San Francisco and Austin — cities cho- sen as crosswords of American cul- ture and industry — season 2, pre- miering Tuesday, Jan. 13, on PBS, will take audiences to New Or- leans, St. Louis and Philadelphia to explore unverified genealogical claims put forth by everyday citi- zens. Often what these normal folks discover are links to larger- than-life historical figures or defin- ing events, such as one woman's ties to an infamous Chinatown gangster and another man's con- nection to the sole survivor of a brutal 1860 massacre. In true historical fashion, the Philadelphia episodes were shot within the barracks of The Histori- cal Society of Pennsylvania and the prestigious Franklin Institute, argu- ably the largest center for science- based education and research in the United States. Producers were especially en- thralled with Philadelphia as the birthplace of the nation, according to early reports, but it's the hidden tales of newcomers and the lower to middle-class neighborhoods that set this show apart (from simi- lar programs such as "Finding Your Roots" and "Who Do You Think You Are?") Recent reviews of "Genealogy Roadshow" say its detective-type premise is similar to "Antiques Roadshow," which also visits cit- ies across the country in the hopes of revealing more than just a text- book answer. Instead of exploring history through family heirlooms, however, "Genealogy Roadshow" chronicles the subjects themselves and the stories that shaped their lives. The diverse onslaught of stories — soon to be revealed — are sim- ply not ones that can be found at the click of a button, the show's top producer said in an interview with NewsWork.org in October. "We live in a world where you can Google anything from your smart- phone," said executive producer Stuart Krasnow. "I love that the an- swers we give you on this show you can't Google." Make new discoveries about "the land of the free, home of the brave" and how it came to fruition when "Genealogy Roadshow" of- ficially hits the road Tuesday, Jan. 13, on PBS.
