What a year it was from the athletics standpoint in 2014 from Rutherford County? No doubt, the story of the year comes from the ladies at East Rutherford. The Lady Cavs snagged the school's fi rst softball title. Savannah Davis was outstanding all year from the mound and at the plate. She returns again this upcoming season. As a matter of fact, most of the club returns to try and repeat the feat. If you take a look at football, senior-laden Thomas Jefferson grabs your attention. The Gryphons picked up 10 wins and nearly went to the regional fi nals, falling to Alleghany in the third round. They had never won a football playoff game in school history until this season. Thomas Jefferson is now 24-14 with Coach Jerry Cash at the helm in just three years. Let's go back to the ladies for just a minute and talk about Rachel Camp. The East Rutherford grad had a sensational year in 2014 among high school athletes. Camp dumped 28.4 points per game last season on opponents named fi rst team all-state and led the Lady Cavs to the fourth round of the playoffs in Greensboro. She also became the new scoring leader in the county, pouring in over 3,000 for her high school career. Camp is now at Virginia Tech and making quick strides. She just became the ACC Rookie of the Week by going off for an average of 31 points and 11.5 rebounds in two games. She leads all ACC freshmen in scoring with 18.1 points per game and ranks fi fth overall in the league. Despite losing the county championship to East Rutherford, R-S Central's football team also makes the list. The Hilltoppers who rebounded from persistent injury woes upset Kings Mountain, overcame Burns and then won a fi rst round playoff game at Bandys. Matt Atchley's catch and run to the one-yard line at the end set up the playoff win in the waning seconds. R-S Central hung with eventual 2AA state champion East Lincoln in round two, but fell 49-28 on the road. Lastly, R-S Central baseball makes the top fi ve. Hendersonville was undefeated going into the postseason and given a number one seed. R-S Central was 10-13, gladly fi nding a wildcard spot in the 2A West. However, Connor Dailey pitched a magnifi cent game and landed the Hilltoppers a 2-1 upset in Henderson County back in May. *The week ahead in basketball* Records: R-S Girls (5-3, 3-1). R-S Boys (5-3, 3-1). East Boys (3-4, 2-2). East Girls (3-4, 1-3). Chase boys (1-7, 0-5) Chase girls (0-8, 0-5) TJCA boys (2-4, 1-0). TJCA girls (1-6, 0-1). R-S Central will go to Freedom during the Christmas break starting on December 27. The boys will see Avery in the fi rst round (5:30pm) and the girls will take on a very tough Porter Ridge club (10am). The boys could end up playing last year's 3A champion, Freedom, who still is talented this season. East Rutherford boys will go to Cherokee on 12/26 and 12/27. The girls will be at Landrum from the Dec. 26-29. East girls will take on Both ladies and gentleman's hoops teams from Chase will travel to Cherryville for the Christmas Tourney in Gaston County next week. Thomas Jefferson will not play again until January 6 at Bessemer City. Merry Christmas to all and to all...a good 2015! Mooring Award, the highest award given to a member of the RRHS medical staff. The award was presented at the RRHS December Medical Staff Conference. Nominations for the Stewart L. Mooring Award are made by each of the Chiefs of Service, the CEO of Rutherford Regional Health System, and offi cers of the Medical Staff. The recipient is selected by the members of the Medical Executive Committee. The criteria for selection is the physician who exemplifi es through service and commitment, the goals and mission of the Medical Staff of Rutherford Regional in providing and advancing a higher standard of medical care for the patients of this community. Person, a radiologist, said, "The legacy of Dr. Stuart Mooring is still very strong in the Radiology Department. On a weekly basis we still discuss all he accomplished during his many years here. I am humbled to be recognized by this award. I accept it as a challenge to work harder to continue to help ensure safe, quality care at our hospital for the people of Rutherford County." Cindy Buck, President and CEO of RRHS, remarked, "Dr. Person is a respected voice among the medical staff and gives of himself personally and professionally to the success of Rutherford Regional. We are extremely fortunate to have him on staff, and he is most deserving of this signifi cant honor." Dr. Stewart L. Mooring, for whom the award is named, set the bar for physicians who receive this award. He was a Radiologist at Rutherford Regional and served as the Medical Director of the Radiology Department from 1962-1989. In 1994, Dr. Mooring was honored by the hospital medical staff by having the lobby of the future outpatient and surgery wing named for him. He passed away in January of 1995. Also presented during the December Medical Staff Conference was a plaque of recognition to Mike Roberts, MD, who has served as the RRHS chief of staff during 2013 and 2014 and was an integral part of the RRHS affi liation with Duke LifePoint Healthcare during that period. Roberts is an orthopaedic surgeon with Rutherford Orthopaedics since 1996. Mrs. Buck said, "Dr. Roberts has served as chief of staff during one of the most remarkable times in RRHS history, and his leadership and wisdom have been incredibly valuable. We are indebted to Dr. Roberts for his unwavering service to the medical staff and to RRHS." Scott Kirkpatrick, MD, will assume chief of staff duties in January 2015 and serve until December 2016. Mike Roberts, MD, was honored for his 2 year term as RRHS Chief of Staff.
