Thursday, September 15-September 21, 2011 www.rutherfordweekly.com Games To Watch This NFL Season Despite a prolonged lock- out that had many worried there would not be a 2011 NFL season, the National Football League and its play- ers eventually resolved their differences, and football fans across the globe rejoiced. With labor issues now a thing of the past, the games have once again taken cen- ter stage. The following are a few of the games football fans won't want to miss this season. • Sunday, October 9, New York Jets at New England Patriots. The Jets memorably traveled up to Foxboro in last season's playoffs and upset their biggest di- vision rival, and this game marks their fi rst trip back to New England since that victory. The renewal of this heated rivalry fi gures to be among Week 5's marquee matchups. New England travels south to New York for their rematch just fi ve weeks later. • Sunday, October 30, Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles. Last year's most disap- pointing team travels to the City of Brotherly Love to face this year's most hyped team. Quarterback Tony Romo and his Dallas teammates are aiming for some redemp- tion after a 2010 campaign witnessed their heavily hyped squad start the season 0-7. The Philadelphia Eagles fi nd themselves as heavy favorites in 2011, thanks in part to a brief, yet impressive, offseason free agent signing frenzy that saw them land the mar- ket's most sought after player, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, and a slew of additional players that quickly transformed Michael Vick's squad from legitimate contenders into possible Super Bowl favorites. • Sunday, November 6, Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers. Fans of hard-hitting defenses won't want to miss this contest be- tween a pair of rivals so bitter they even took their trash talk to Twitter during the offseason. Ravens running back Ray Rice couldn't resist commenting about Steelers receiver Hines Ward's offseason arrest via Twitter earlier this year. This rematch of the season opener fi g- ures to be as heated as ever when the teams return to the scene of their hotly contested playoff battle from last season, a battle the Steelers won thanks to a late touchdown run from running back Rashard Mendenhall. The 2011 NFL schedule features fi ve of the past seven Super Bowl matchups, including this rematch of Super Bowl XLIV. Don't spend too much time get- ting snacks in the kitchen, as high-powered offenses led by two of the game's best quar- terbacks, the Colts' Peyton Manning and the Saints' Drew Brees, fi gure to light up the scoreboard in what promises to be among the most entertaining games of the year. • Saturday, December 24, New York Giants at New York Jets. New Yorkers get an early Christmas present with this rare regular sea- son matchup between the city's two teams, neither of which is especially fond of the other. While the Jets begin the 2011 season as the boastful byproduct of their outspoken head coach, the Giants hope to silence a team that has managed to take the back pages of New York's famed tabloids away from them the last couple of seasons. The matchup fi gures to be about more than city bragging rights, as both teams might just be battling for playoff position by the time they lock horns the day before Christmas. • Sunday, December 25, Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers. Come Christmas morn- ing, fans might be preoccupied opening pres- ents. But don't forget to open this present from the NFL later in the day. This game is a rematch of last season's NFC champion- ship game between the Bears and the even- tual Super Bowl champion Packers. Bears fans will hope this game doesn't feature an early exit from quarterback Jay Cutler, who infamously missed much of the second half of last season's conference championship matchup with an injury many Bears fans found questionable.
