By Matt Masterson Freeman Staff WAUKESHA — Elmbrook Senior Taxi Board Chair Sandy Wolff was honored recently with the Waukesha County Department of Parks and Land Use, Community Development Division's fourth annual Michael Stivoric CDBG Community Leadership Award. Wolff, a former Waukesha County Board supervisor from 1998 to 2008, was hon- ored during a Community Development Block Grant Board meeting for her efforts with Elmbrook Senior Taxi, which offers rides to seniors and disabled adults in the city and town of Brookfield, as well as Elm Grove and Butler. Wolff helped found the pro- gram in 1993 and said through her first couple months, they provided only 14 rides. Since then the program has expand- ed dramatically — going from helping dozens to hundreds and thousands. "The Elmbrook Senior Taxi will, this year, provide more than 6,000 rides to seniors and disabled adults in Waukesha County, helping people remain independent by con- necting them with support services and community resources," said Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas, who presented Wolff with the award. The award recognizes vol- unteer efforts to CDBG-fund- ed agencies and offers a $1,000 donation, which Wolff made sure would benefit the taxi program. "We have been running a deficit so this is going to really help," she said. "We have a fundraiser going, we have a raffle going. The city of Brookfield has always provided us with some money in their budget, but the Town of Brookfield, But- ler and Elm Grove haven't. So we have approached them all. Hopefully we get in their budgets this year." The award's namesake was also recognized during his final CDBG Board meet- ing. Michael Stivoric was first appointed to the board 25 years ago when it was run through Waukesha by Vrakas' father, former Mayor Paul Vrakas. He has since been reappointed by County Executives Dan Fin- ley and Vrakas. Stivoric emigrated to Canada from a small village in Croatia when he was just 15 years old. He moved to Waukesha in 1982 and has since been involved with nonprofits and organiza- tions including the Catholic Knights, Milwaukee Volun- teer Center, Cardinal Stritch University, St. Vincent de Paul Society and Habitat for Humanity. Stivoric received an apos- tolic blessing from and enjoyed an audience with the late Pope John Paul II, but said his time working with the CDBG board will always be a cherished memory. "For me it has been a won- derful lifetime experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life," he said.
